Dordognes or Provence or both?

Two weeks in late September, early October, and we're looking to be active (biking, hiking, walking) while enjoying good food and wine. Trying to decide between either region, or a combination. And can we do it on our own? Would also consider doing one area plus Paris for a few days. Recommendations please!

They are very different. I struggled with this a couple of years ago and finally decided to spend two weeks in Provence. We have just recently returned from Dordogne area spending about 12 days there. I would choose one or the other especially if you want to spend time hiking, etc. as well as seeing the towns and country side. If you try to do both you will spend more time getting from one to the other. A hard choice. Happy travels!!!

Hi deb,

One doesn't "do Paris for a few days". One slowly partakes of her allure and charms.

With these conditions, I would visit
A: Paris and Dordogne
B: Paris and Provence
C: Dordogne and Provence.

A car is going to be very useful outside Paris.

Enjoy your visit.

Why Dordogne over Provence? I am curious as also trying to decide. Provence is definite for 1 week. I have another week and half to play with (with the "half" being spent in Paris). So one week. More of Provence/South of France or head to Dordogne?

I agree with ira (and yes a car is essential in the Dordogne and highly advisable in Provence), but I wouldn't drive FROM Paris to either the Dordogne or Provence; I'd take the train.

Spend your second week in Paris. If you need a break from the city, take a day trip to Giverny or Chartres or Fontainebleau etc.
