Dordogne with a toddler

Hi,

I have found myself in a sort of strange situation. I have someone asking me about where I stayed in Sarlat last year.

This person, though, is coming with a two-and-a-half year-old. Flying into Bordeaux and is wondering where to stay, worried about the driving, etc. I never flew into the area and so cannot comment about picking up a car there, traffic from Bordeaux, good/best routes, that kind of thing.

She also wondered if there are playgrounds, parks, fun things for young children. I haven't the faintest idea. I do recall having lunch in a big park in Domme...? I have suggested staying in or near Sarlat. What do the experts think would be best place to stay for a single parent with a small child? They are visiting in October.

Yes, I did advise her to post her questions here. So far, no go.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi L,

If she won't post her questions here, we can't answer them.

To clarify, the questions are:

Does anyone have any suggestions for toddler-friendly places to stay in or near Sarlat?

Recommendations for parks, playgrounds or other young-kid-friendly activities?

Is the drive from Bordeaux airport to Perigord Noir horrendous? If so, does anyone have other transportation suggestions?

Any other tips are of course welcome.

Driving from Bordeaux to the Sarlat area isn't particularly horrible, though it's one of those "deadliest roads in France" with all the cutouts of dead people at fatal accident spots, so it's wise to be careful. Getting out of Bordeaux is a bit tricky, but no more so than getting out of a lot of French cities. You just have to make sure you stay in the lane to Siorac and go over the right bridge.

And yes, there are playgrounds and parks all over the place. In Sarlat in summer there's a big carousel right in the main square at the front of the parking lot - my kids spent hours there when they were young. And every town has a municipal center with a pool and usually some sort of playground for kids. And there are walks along the river banks and parks galore and boat rides and those little tourist trains in Domme and elsewhere, and so on. Also, the 3- and 4-star campgrounds, which are ubiquitous, have great resources for kids even if you're not staying there.

But this would only be through the first two weeks in October. After that, probably no go on much of anything I've mentioned.
