Doolin Ferry to Ireland's Aran Island?
My family is considering taking a ferry from Doolin to Inishmore. I've read several posts on other sites that the ferries are not entirely reliable as they cancel frequently due to weather. We will be visiting around 30 Aug-1 Sept. Has anyone had this experience?
Our alternative is to drive from Dingle to the Cliffs of Moher and then on to Galway to take the new highspeed boat from Galway City. We could stay the night in Galway after seeing the Cliffs and take the boat the next morning.
Thanks for your help!
Jennifer

I have taken the Doolin ferry twice. Once several years ago and again last year. Both trips early in July. The boat they use now is fairly new and larger then the old boat. Late summer should be fine however there is always the chance of a storm. They also have a short ride several times a day to the Cliffs and the view from the sea is spectacular. If you don't want to stay in Doolin Lisdoonvarna is a nice village about 10 minutes away. Have fun

The boats are more likely to cancel in the spring and fall, though bad weather can happen any time. I was there in mid May and they didn't run for 3 days. If you are going out and coming back on different days, you could have an issue of not being able to get back to the same place you started.
I'm not sure how big your group is, but aer arann http://www.aerarannislands.ie/indexnew.html offers a discount for groups of 4 or more and isn't much more than a boat trip. I couldn't find the rates for Doolin Ferries on their website but I may just be daft.
The air flight is 10 minutes and if you have folks with motion sickness issues, it could be a better choice.

Thanks for all the additional information. Bill, my husband is a pilot so I had researched the flight options. Unfortunately we'll just have two adults and one toddler so I don't know if we can get a decent air rate with fewer than 4. I have a message in with them to check.
