Domestic travel within Italy
Hi Everybody.
I am wanting to start working out my budget and I was wondering which style of transport (and if trains, which kind of train in particular). There will of course be instances where I would choose speed over price so I was hoping for an idea for each category.
1. - Shorter distances e.g Venice to Bologna or Florence to Cinque Terre
- Fastest?
- Cheapest?
- Scenic route?
2. - Longer distances e.g Cinque Terre to Napels or Amalfi Coast to Rome
- Fastest?
- Cheapest?
- Scenic route?
3. - Cross Country e.g Zagreb, Croatia to Venice
- Fastest?
- Cheapest?
Appreciate any advice before I tackel Google!
Regards, Emay

Trains in Italy, look up schedules, buy tickets up to 120 days in advance using italian city names:
http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/inde...005817f90aRCRD
Certain regional trains can't be pre-purchased.
Zagreb-Venice, by train 9-10 hours with a couple of changes.

You can find great deals even on the fastest/higher-priced trains if you purchase online at the site RonZ mentioned well before your date of travel. Discounts are available 120 days in advance, but the number of discounted seats are limited. Therefore, the closer you get to the date of travel, the best discounts may disappear, and then all discounts may disappear.
At trenitalia.com, do a test: Search for tickets for Venezia SL (Santa Lucia) to Bologna CE (Centrale) for a date two weeks from today. Then search for a date four weeks from today and then a date eight weeks from today. You will see a variety of prices available.

CT is mostly served by slow regional trains. No discounts, no reserved seating and can only be bought online 7 days in advance. Best to buy regional tickets in Italy as there are less restrictions on them.
No trains on the Amalfi coast. Getting there will depend on where you actually plan to stay.
To snag discount train tickets, book the fast trains (they only serve large cities)in advance. Venice/Bologna or Florence, Florence/Naples and Naples/Rome.
>>>1. - Shorter distances
2. - Longer distances<<<
If you travel Venice/CT, it will be 6 hours of travel so really shouldn't be on your shorter list.

www.seat61.com is the site with answers to just about any train question, just about everywhere in Europe and maybe elsewhere too.

There are often cheap flights from smaller airports in Italy to other italian destinations or Croatian cities. If you think outside the box about how to order your trip, and utilize smaller regional airports, you can sometimes come up with both cheaper and faster if you are willing to fly. Devil is in the details and your willingness to do a lot of research about airports and what's available for your time frame.

There are no trains on the AC - only bus, ferry or taxi.
You can get one of those to Sorrento and from there take the small local train to Naples and then fast train to Rome.
typical local or slow regional trains don;t have big discounts - but the fast trains do - but if you buy discounted tickets you are tying yourself to a specific train - you just can't switch to another without at lest paying full fare. Also in Italy fast trains require a reservation - I think 10 euros per but am not sure since we usually drive.

Trenitalia ISN'T the only (or cheapest, or best equipped, or fastest) operator of long distance trains along the Venice - Turin/Milan - Florence- Rome- Naples corridor, though for some reason the crypto-Marxists on this site seem determined to push people towards using the government owned operator.
Why they do this is unclear, unless they really are working for the victory of the proletariat over fat capitalists.
If you want to exercise a choice, compare the socialist's preferred option to the one those without an ideological bias use: Italotreno.

you can also bus zagreb to split, then take an overnight sleeper ferry (surprisingly cheap and comfy)to ancora ... then bus or quick tain to venice. ocean24.com has the route and schedule. (i just posted about this the other day...)
we just buy our italian train tix online and look for the cheap ones that are on special.. but those are mostly for the fast trains. as ellenem said above, prices vary wildly from day to day.
