Dolomites to the Engadine?

I'm really not sure which forum to post this question to....but I will try here first!

We can get Frequent Flyer tickets to either Milan or Venice right now, for next June. Our goal is to see the Dolomites in Italy, then train or drive (cost of taking a car into Switzerland from Italy might be prohibitive...we fly out of Zurich) into the Engadine region. We hope to spend several days there sightseeing, walking, etc. and realize a car would be best there too. Maybe a different rental than the first one?

Anyway, I am trying to determine whether VCE or Milan would be the best to fly into. If we do Milan, maybe we could go via Lake Maggiore, or Lugano up into Switzerland and just skip the Dolomites. I really want to focus on beautiful mountain scenery and the Engadine region is a must. Celerina and Pontresina seem to be highly recommended!
We will end up in the Berner Oberland, staying in Wengen which we loved from this year.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Polly,

You are on the right forum!

Both the Dolomites and the Engadine are exquisite. I can't say which one I prefer more. They aren't that far away from each other and you can easily get from one destination to the other within in a matter of 3-4 hours.

Personally, I'd fly into Venice, spend a few days there, rent a car and spend the rest of the time between the Dolomites and the Engadine. On the way back to Venice, stop off at Sirmeone or Bardolino (on Garda lake) as well as a quick visit to Verona. Drive back to Venice.

I know a nice man who owns a B&B in Verona if you'd like a recommendation.

Sounds like a great vacation!

Why not flying into Venice, spending a few days in the Dolomites, then taking the train/bus to the Engadine? There is a very good connection from Merano to Zernez/Engadine since recently which I think would be perfect for your itinerary.

No car needed in the Engadine. The buses and trains run frequently, fast and even to places where you cannot drive to.

Here's what we did - flew into Venice, spent a few days there, picked up a car and drove to Cortina. Hiked and saw some neat sights near Cortina. Drove the Great Dolomite Road between Cortina and Bolzano. that took a full day. From Bolzano, you can drive down the wine road to the Lake Region and from there to Zurich. We, however, went from the Lakes to Milan and then back to Venice for the return home. You might want to look at dropping a car in Italy and taking a train to Zurich instead.

Can you fly into Malpensa and home from Venice? That'd be ideal. One car, pick up and return in Italy. No problem...

Milan -> Lakes -> Engadine -> Dolomites -> Venice.

If you plan to end in the BO then I see little reason for the Dolomites--which I do love. Fly into Milan---train to Lugano to get the car and either stay at the lakes or move on to the Engadine via St. Moritz. You can always drive into the other countries, just not drop there.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies and help. BobtheNavigator you got it right that the Berner Oberland area is a must.

By mistake I posted this to the Europe forum as well as the Switzerland forum; I really only wanted the Swiss forum but don't know how to end the Europe one, or direct folks to the other. Any hints?

I do really appreciate everyone's recommendations. I have until tonight at 11 to confirm or cancel my dual reservations to Malpensa or Venice. But now I'm thinking about what someone said regarding just flying into and out of Zurich and renting a car there for the not too distant trip to the Engadine. Then the Berner Oberland and back to Zurich. I wish I had a better idea of driving times and distances.

This June we did everything with our Swiss Pass, and loved the trains; so easy.
