Dolomites day trip?

Jump to last reply

We will be in the Piedmont area (Barbaresco) for a few days in early October before heading down to Florence. Is it completely ridiculous to consider stopping off in Castelrotto and doing a day hike in the Dolomites, before heading down?

I realize the weather in Castelrotto in October is probably going to be hit-or-miss, so I'm sort of pre-supposing that the weather is favorable. In other words, assuming the weather gods smile on us, is it at all practical to take a cable car up, hike around, cable car down, all in a few hours? I don't have a good feel for how frequent the cable cars will be at that time of year., nor how long the hikes can be.

Lastly, we have some flexibility on a starting point, if Castelrotto is not the ideal spot for our needs, but some other place nearby is.
