does it make sense to drive to paris from germany?
i am not finding any good deals to travel to paris from freiburg germany. Can i just drive? it's only 5 to 6 hours. i have never driven in europe, is there something i need to be aware of?
anyone knows how much the tolls are?
can i find parking in paris? or can i find inexpensive lodging and parking near paris and then take a train to paris?
thanks

Bit confused. Have you looked at trains?
I would think that renting a car and paying parking (can be $$) would be way more expensive than a one-way (?) rail ticket. Plus, you really don;t want to use a car to tour Paris...what with finidng parking and paying.
So you would rent a car and..not use it for days?
What are your plans for this car?

Are you planning to rent a car in Germany and leave it in France? That's not a good plan, as you'll incur a hefty drop-off fee.
Fuel is expensive, tolls are expensive, parking in Paris is a bit of an oxymoron. Sure you could park outside and take a train in from dozens of places, but if it's a rental car that's a waste of rental money.
What options have you explored? Train? Airlines? Have you looked at www.whichbudget.com?

> all the good fares are gone
By the time you passed all these toll booths and paid for the gas, even the full price will have been cheaper than the drive.
Plus, try to look for a good fare from Colmar to Paris on
www.voyages-sncf.com
There are regular buses from Freiburg to Colmar:

Leaving money out of the discussion.
If you just want to get from Germany to Paris with no stops, then I'd use the train.
If you want to take some time to explore on the way, stopping here and there as you wish or by whim, then a car is the way to go--getting rid of it when you arrive in Paris.

I have driven often from Germany to Paris. No sweat.
Stay in a motel/hotel in the suburbs and take the train into Paris. The hotels in the outskirts are much cheaper than in Paris, and some even have a pool.
Driving time is 6 hours. Toll is 17.70 Euros one way, and gas should be 70 Euros one way.

If you want to include Versailles in your visit, you could consider Ibis Paris Chateau de Versailles. Unfortunately, it's not in the Chateau, but 200m away. It has car parking and it's only 50m from the RER Station which had frequent fast trains into Paris. There are lots of other Ibis hotels around Paris that you can choose from.

thanks IRA, this sounds perfect.
I have been trying to find this on www.voyages-sncf.com but either i am a complete idiot or this site is just not working for me.
when i fill in all the stuff it asks you where you'd like to pick up tickets and i say USA, the website closes itself. if i say germany the page comes back in german which i cannot read to save my life.
can i get these fares from the station? Are PREM fares gone pretty quick? i am hoping to get them for 1st may weekend.

Do not "pick up" tickets. leave the country as France and choose to print the tickets (only possible if you uncheck the cancellation insurance). Then print it and you are good to go.
>can i get these fares from the station?
In principle yes, but...
>Are PREM fares gone pretty quick?
Exactly. It is rather improbable that the TGV you want is sold out, but the cheap fares are only a few.
