Does Anyone Have the Scoop on Montenegro? Should we stick to a day trip or make it a longer stay?

Hello,

We are pounding out a 6 week trip that spans Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Cezch Republic. We were planning on flying into Dubrovnik but now we are considering trying to fly into Montenegro instead and spending a few nights. We'd like to see the following.....

1. Kotor
2. Budva
3. Bar (Stari Bar)
4. Sveti Stefan
4. Ostrog Monastery

It looks like we'd need to fly in to Podgorica or do you think its easier to just fly into Dubrovnik? How hard is it to bus between the countries? Exiting the countary we would be wanting public transportation to Dubrovnik.

We love to use public transportation when traveling - honestly we enjoy it. We also just don't want to drive, so car rental is not an option for us.

We don't see many posts on Montenegro and our guide sort of skims over it quickly. What have peoples experiences staying in this country been like? Have you found it high quality and interesting for your money? Or would you just day trip via a tour and stick to its northern neighbours?

Would love to hear people's impressions of the place.

There are regular buses from Dubrovnik to Montenegro, with at least one a day to Kotor and Budva, and more to Herceg Novi.

In Montenegro, there are frequent buses from Herceg Novi via Kotor and Budva to Podgorica.
I stopped a night in Kotor last December and thought it really worthwhile. I went on to Budva and Bar, then by overnight ferry to Bari.

Thanks Jean - we will be staying in Dubrovnik for at least 5 days to do day trips around that area. Then on to Korcula, Hvar....and up and up. We are just thinking of adding a few days in Montenegro to see some of its sites...we wonder how easy this is to do on our own either starting from Dubrovnik then heading south by bus or by flying into Podigorica to avoid backtracking.

Cheers,

Naxos

Oh sorry about that Geoff - we posted at the same time. That is really good to hear about transportation between the countries - we had read you had to take numerous buses because no buses actually cross the boarder - which sounded inconvenient-lol!

Thanks!

Bob, What camera did you use for those pictures? Looks like a digital SLR?

You are quite welcome. My camera is really just average---a 5 MGP Fuji digital that was new at the time of that trip. My experience is that the camera does not matter much. The light matters most, and we were mostly blessed.

I would spend a couple days instead of doing a daytrip. We did the Atlas tour a couple years ago and didn't really enjoy it, we felt way too rushed. The tour was exactly as promised but just not for us (if you click on my name you can see my trip report from Croatia and I have an entry for the Montenegro trip). I can't give you any info on public transport, besides the day tour we drove ourselves.

Here is a link to my Montenegro photos (as well as Croatia and Bosnia) :

Have a great trip !
