Do people wear ski jacket in the city when it snows?
My hubby and I are dreaming of a white Christmas, and we're going to Paris, Prague, Munich, and Innsbruck for two weeks in mid December.
We’re going to take only one outer-most wear so we’re deciding between a coat and a ski jacket (stuffy one). Ski jacket sounds practical as it’s easier to pack. But if wearing a ski jacket in the city seems odd, we’d bring a coat instead.
We’re from San Diego, so there isn’t any snow here (except in the San Diego zoo). Please advise. Thanks in advance.

You can dress as you please. I have seen enough odd getups in Paris to convince me that you wear anything that will not get you arrested or thrown out of a restaurant!
And after having dined next to a man in an undershirts who talked to himself, I think it takes a lot to get you dismissed in Paris!!

Unless there is a blizzard - unlikely in any of those places - and by the way your chances of getting snow in mid December in any of them is quite slim - people wear there regular winter coat. You can wear ski jacket if you want - no one will care - but they're unnecessary.

I recently addressed this problem for next Dec. I was looking for a coat which is fleece on the inside and microfiber on the outside (for water resistance.) Couldn't find that but did find one which is microfiber with fake fur on the inside. It is very warm and I expect to wear it the whole trip. It is bulky but with the exception of time on the plane, I will be wearing it. And on the plane, I can stuff it in the overhead (or make a great pillow out of it. I prefer a coat because it will keep your legs warm. Have a great time ! CJ

Don't bring a ski coat unless you are going skiing. If you are planning to ski, then bring it.
It will be cold and you will need warm wear. I wear a longer down coat when I am in the cities. It is more practical and can go anywhere (except the ski slopes!).
Cheers,
Jan

We take a ski vacation in Europe every year (leaving for Austria in two days, in fact!) and always spend a few days on either side of our ski week in some non-skiing area. To save space, we just bring our ski jackets and then wear them when we're not skiing. Nobody has ever seemed to care, or even notice.

Thanks for your encouragement everyone, and CJ and Tulips for your tips. We felt more confident to wear the jacket now. We’ll try to get the ones in black to blend in.
FlyFish, wish for you a great time skiing!
