Dismantling of the toll on the M50, what to do?

In getting directions to our sc cottage near Carlow, the landlady sent this~

"They have just dismantled the toll on the M50 (yesterday) so, when you pick up your car, ask the car hire people what you are supposed to do about it (we all have to register on line before we use it, but,so far, I have seen nothing about what tourists are supposed to do)."

Anyone have any knowledge or other suggestions?

Tolls have not gone. It's simply that the arrangements for paying them have changed. Cars simply use the road, and their passage is recorded electronically. You can pay tolls online, but that's likely to be more trouble than it's worth.

The liability for the toll goes with the car and not with the driver, and I expect that the car hire companies will know how to get toll fees from their clients. I'd go with your landlady's advice, and ask them how to deal with it.

There are a few "Ireland only" forums that have extensive info about it. A Google search may turn them up.

It's like the London Congestion charge. If you don't have electronic tag in your car (and rental cars are unlikely to), you have to pay for the toll yourself (at 3 euro each time) by settling in cash at a newsagent or other shops authorised to receive payments (with a Payzone sign). If you do it before 8 pm the following day, there is no penalty. If you don't, rental company will get a penalty notice, and they will either send it on to you or pay it themselves and charge your card with a service fee on top.
So you should first check with the rental company about their policy, and be prepared to settle yourself. Other than Payzone, you can pay online at www.eflow.ie. by credit or debit card, or calling the 24-hour call centre at 1890 501050.

Hey wrenwood! Thanks for the heads up on this. I am going home in a week and checked online for more information. I guess it is like our "fastrack" here in California, you have an electronic pass that charges every time you go through and those that don't have it will have to prepay or pay at a newsagent or other agent before 8 pm the next night otherwise there is a penalty. So now I am just going to take the N3 to Summerhill and then cut down to the N4. That way, I am guessing that I will miss the toll on the M50 as well as the toll on the "M4". Where there's a will, there's a way!"

Good idea Maureencol, I'll check the map and see if we can avoid it altogether!

You can avoid the toll by driving through the city (going around the city on a wider circuit isn't really a workable option). It wouldn't bother me to go through Dublin, but I know my way around. You might find it to be more trouble than it is worth.

My guess is the rental car agency may do a tag recognition for rental cars.

A lot of information here

Padraig, appreciate the thought but I am not driving through Dublin my first day!

Just returned from Ireland. The rental car companies are stating that the renter is responsible for paying the toll. As noted by other posters, the toll must be paid before 8:00pm of next day or additional charges are applied. Payment is made at PayZone outlets - which, as visitors, we are expected to find & locate!
My B&B hostess in Kilkenny knew where a PayZone was located and handled it for me.
On returning car to Dublin airport, I had a second M50 toll. It can be paid at the "sweet shop" kiosk in Dublin airport or at the Esso station located near many of the rental car drop-off facilities.

Wow, thanks for the first hand info!

Our landlady also said not to worry, she'll handle it. And on the way back to the airport, we'll pay at the Esso or the "sweet shop"

Thanks!
