What are the advantages of using the hotel website or some place like Travelocity,
I know you might get discounted prices on Travelocity but I found a hotel in Barcelona
that shows the same rates as travelocity. The only thing different is that the hotel site
says nonrefundable whereas Travelocity doesn't .

There are so many variables that it's impossible to generalise. Sometimes the booking sites give better price and terms, sometimes the hotel's own website does. Often booking direct with a hotel gives you better rooms, as they don't have to pay commission. When hotels are heavily booked, because of some festivals or conventions, you can sometimes find a room throgh booking sites even if the hotel itself says full, as they get an allocation of rooms which they market themselves. At a slack period, hotels often 'dump' rooms to booking sites and sgents if tehy themselves don't want to be seen to be slashing prices (this often goes for luxury hotels).
Good advice from Alec
I always use the travel sites, any my consolidator, then check with the hotel itself and ask if they can do better. Same with airlines. I generally end up with the best rates from either the hotel or airline itself, or the consolidator.
