Dinnertime in the Amalfi Coast
Everyone has written about how difficult parking is. Here's my question... If I'm staying in Amalfi, would it be difficult to drive to Positano (and park the car) for dinner? (Or drive to any other town for dinner.) Are you more likely to drive places during the day and stay near your base at night? A large part of the appeal of going to Italy for my husband is the fabulous food, so I want to make sure we'll be able to get great dinners, either by driving there or by having great places near our base.
That being said...who has some great restaurant suggestions?

In Sorrento. Walk to the far west end of town - wind down the little alleyways past all of the little tourist shops - until you get to the water. Here you will find a working class fishing village. Old men tying nets and children running around the fountain. There you will find Tratoria Amelia (she's usually chasing her brother around the fountain). Mama, Papa what seems to be a host of relatvies will serve you a delicious and fairly cheap fresh seafood meal (we love the vongole) on a barge that floats on the water. Tables fill up quick with locals go just

Jacquie - I think there's less of a problem in the evening - even in high season.

I can second Steve's tip for Da Costantino. Great food at fair prices - I recommend the gnocchi al sugo. Try to get there before sundown so you can catch the views. Bookings recommended. It's at the top of Positano and from memory there was quite a bit of street parking.

I highly recommend that you not take a care to Amalfi. For the amount of money you will spend to rent a car, you will not get as much use out of it as you think. If you are not going to Amalfi to basically lounge around and relax, but instead imagine you will be on the go every day, visiting a variety of places, you might consider picking a different Italian destination (like Tuscany, Liguria or Piemonte) where the food is fabulous and bopping around in a car is a lot more fun.
There is only one main road on the Amalfi coast, which has tortuous curves that hug cliffs. If you are going in summer, it is a traffic nightmare, and at any time of year, it is anything but a relaxing drive
However, if you are committed to Amalfi, my first question is: Do you plan to drink at dinner? If so, I would recommend you eat every night in Amalfi itself, where you are unlikely to run out of good restuarants, and go to lunch in other places (you can take the bus). Don't rent a car, but take a taxi to and from other towns on those hopefully few nights you will want to eat outside Amalfi.
My favorite restaurants are in Ravello, in particular the restaurant Salvatore, which is probably better as a lunch spot because of its fabulous views. I also enjoyed eating at Da Zaccaria in Atrani, which is actually walkable from Amalfi.
