Dinner Recommendation in Copenhagen?

I need a restaurant recommendation for a birthday dinner in Copenhagen, Denmark. We will be staying at the Marriott and would like to walk to a restaurant. I would also like a restaurant serving danish food since we have never been to Denmark. I am looking in the $100 US per person price range. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Thanks in advance

We'll be at the same hotel in July; I'd like to see the recommendations, too, however I'm not so confident about the price ranges.

The strange thing about dining in Denmark is that whenever you are about to dine out in a quality restaurant, it's very likely to have at least some French cuisine influence to its dishes.

That said, I reeally enjoy a small restaurant in the Nyhavn area, which serves quality food in an adorable setting. They have a courtyard that is particularly pleasant, plus it is heated by gas torches if necessary and can be covered by a large sunsail.
The name of the restaurant is Zeleste and it is located on Store Strandstraede, just off Nyhavn.

Whether this is walking distance from the Marriott, though remains open to one's hiking abilities, but then the Marriott is quite a bit of a walk from most places around town.

HSV, thank you for the rec. I know you don't like the Marriott much but we've stayed there before.

Between Copenhagen and Stockholm I'm not sure which was worse in terms of deciding on a hotel while using TripAdvisor reviews.

I've stayed at the Marriott many years ago when it just opened, it was an impressive modern hotel with very good personalized service at bargain rate although the immediate area was still begging for gentrification. No swimming pool, but then again I was told that pool in Scandinavia is a total luxury considering the weather. There was a convenience store just a block away, but the Tivoli was only a few blocks away. It really doesn't matter if you just take the taxi using the money you save by staying at the Marriott. Hotel d'Angleterre would be my recommendation if you're looking for the best location and classic architecture.

I like hsv recommendation to eat at Nyhavn, we really enjoyed absorbing the port atmosphere especially when the sunlight lit the building row. There is a bazaar of different restaurants to choose from. However for a birthday dinner perhaps you may want to consider a nicer restaurant such as Le Sommelier by the Amalienborg:
www.lesommelier.dk.
In case you're wondering: 1 USdollar is now only 5.5 Danish Krone.

Dax,

This is all the more reason we had "difficulty" deciding on a hotel in Copenhagen (even though we stayed at the Marriott in the past and yes I agree that it is an easy walk to Tivoli and the main train station and farther from other sites...and no longer quite as cheap).

I looked at all the ones usually recommended here to include The Square, The Front, and others again using TripAdvisor as an additional resource.

Unfortunately, Hotel d'Angleterre does not get the greatest of reviews on TA although for one night (as long as we're staying) it might have been worth the chance.

Guess I'm too much of a non-adventurer sometimes.

NOMA is amazing for dinner and located on the waterfront--www.noma.dk.

If you are interested in a different hotel, the Bertrams Hotel Guldsmeden www.hotelguldsmeden.dk is great. It has a really fabulous homemade breakfast served in a kitchen and is more like a cross between a B&B and a hotel. The rooms are spacious and beds are great, it has a courtyard and attached shop with water, foodstuffs and gifty items.

Dukey,

don't get me wrong: I would always contemplate staying at the Marriott myself. For once, I like Marriotts (as they are reliable to a certain degree, and I love their Revive beds). I just thought for someone unfamiliar with the city (as I now am aware you aren't) I'd mention that Nyhavn would be a bit of a hike from the Marriott for some. Tivoli and main station, of course are very accessible (in fact, I find most of the town walkable and would even walk from the Marriott to Nyhavn, but Americans tend to have a different view on distances).

Be aware that Zeleste is not in the sunny row directly on Nyhavn, which DAX mentioned, but about 50 metres away in a side street. The restaurant is still great IMHO for what it is.

HSV..thanks for your reply.

I honestly wish we were going to have more time this trip because where I'd really LIKE to go back to is Hamburg but we just couldn't fit it in..and I KNOW you are the expert in all things Hamburg(er) so hopefully, in the near future, I'll be asking your advice.

Cheers.

Dukey, I'm guessing D'Angeleterrre is a mixed bag like the Westin/ex-Interconti in Paris, it can be great but a nightmare if you get the lowest room category. I should have included the fact that I have only been to the hotel d'Angleterre restaurant but two different friends of mine had terrific stays on company expense account, one of them was just there last month and really liked the hotel.

Thank you all for the wonderful recommendations and the quick replies! The Marriott is no longer an inexpensive hotel to stay at. Living in Atlanta, GA we are weary of staying anywhere without air conditioning and the number of hotels offering air conditioning was limited. I will scout out the other hotel recommendations while I am there too. I have also emailed the concierce at the Marriott to get a dining tip too.

Thanks again everyone!!!

Dax,

Thanks for your reply. I understand completely.

Geechong,

Yes, the presence of A/C at the Marriott I found kinda compelling. The last time we stayed it was both warm and muggy in Copenhagen and we appreciated the cooling.

Noma is terrific. It is located in a warehouse in the Christianshavn section on a quay. Nordic gourmet cuisine is featured and fantastic. We had a great evening surrounded by Danes not other American tourists.

personally, I would stay at the copenhagen strand in the nyhavn area-easy acess to most sites and museums, a water tour, etc. we have walked from there to the tivoli and back and in between-not a big deal. there is a samll restaurant filled with locals in nyhavn, about midway down the block, you walk down a few step, buffet style, fresh salmon, roasted chicken, roast beef, corn, other vegs, good beer and all you can eat for about $25 per person which by danish standards is downright cheap and very good. maybe not for a birthday paty but for another night. if you are interested, email me and i'll find the name.

I did receive a wonderful recommendation from the concierge at the Marriott. They recommended the following restaurant:

Considering your requirements I would very much recommend you to visit the restaurant called Gammel Strand. It fulfils all your requirements and we often recommend guests to go there as it is a very nice place with a cosy atmosphere near the hotel.

You can visit the web page of the restaurant and see for your self if it's a place you would like to go: www.gammelstrand.dk

I checked out the website and it looks like they offer lots of different options for my guests. Interesting enough - the recommendation was not on the hotels own website.

I was also reading that the Marriott was having a facelift. My preference would be staying at a boutique hotel with very modern Scandavian furnishings - but A/C trumps it all!

Dukey and myself will be basking in A/C while at the hotel. Besides - I get Marriott Points too. I am kind of a points junkie.

Thanks to all again!!

Gammel Strand Restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark was a really nice and special restaurant. Of course, nothing in Copenhagen is cheap. The restaunrant is very quaint - probably only seats 50-60 people.

My party of 6 was seated promptly at our designated reservation time. The restaurant is located in a wonderful old building, probably at least 200 years old. The staff speaks english well and they have a la carte or pri fix (with or without wine pairings). We all chose the pri fix with wine pairings. Each course was wonderful and a melange of Danish and French cuisine. The pastry chef also made a wonderful sampler of three individual deserts for the party. Dinner came out to be about $175 pp after taxes and tip. We never felt rushed and had a wonderful birthday celebration. Each course was not started on until we indicated to start.

I believe that I started with some cured salmon with salmon roe and cucumber. The main course was another fish course while some other members of the party had vension. The mini deserts consisted of fruit tarte, chocolate mousse followed by a cheesecake.

Gammel Strand translated actually means old town and there is a flea market there during the day in the month of July.

Just a little friendly comment: Gammel Strand actually means Old Beach because the fishing ships came in at the canal (in front of the restaurant) in the old days to sell their fish.
Brgds from Copenhagen.
