Going w/ a friend to Rome 3 nights and no luck in hotels during September. We are looking for a good hotel, not stuffy but nice/chic like, willing to spend $300 - $350 a nite, want it in a good location such as Spanish Steps. Here is where we called thus far and either fully booked or quoting over $400 - $500 a nite: d'Inghilterra, scalinata dispagna, westin excelsion, hassler, gregorina, ambasciatori palace, la residenza, condotti, hotel de russie, eden, splendid royal. Thoughts?

<BR>Talia, I don't know if this helps but we stayed at the De la Ville Intercontinental Roma, right next to the Hassler, at the top of the Steps, in June. It's a 4 star. We'd probably stay there again, staff courteous. Dining area/bar nice. Rooms older tho but ours had full bath with tub. <BR>Price included just a basic continental breakfast, could pay more for full. Talia: Check out the Minerva, it used to be a Crowne Plaza but I don't think it is anymore. It is located in Centro Storico a stones throw from the Pantheon. Great old building, elegantly restored. Wonderful roof top restaurant for drinks and dinner with a view of the entire city. I believe we paid about $250 a night in May 2000. <BR> <BR>

Did you try Hotel Manfredi, or Hotel Mozart? <BR> <BR>They are not as chic as D'Inghilterra, or the Eden, or the Excelsior, but they are about the same level of Condotti, or a little less, hmm, refined, but still good hotels. <BR> <BR>I don't like the Plaza, since some rooms are out dated, and bathrooms as well, nor I like Via del Corso, because is too busy, but still, it can be an option. It's very handy to Piazza di Spagna, and the lobby and some public rooms are gorgeous. <BR> <BR>Another option would be the Colonna Palace. It caters mostly to groups, but is a nice hotel, and it's at Piazza Montecitorio, quite close to Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and Fontana di Trevi. <BR> <BR>You' chances are higher regarding these two, Plaza and Colonna, since they are bigger, and will likely have available rooms for your dates. <BR> <BR>Other options would be Hotel Raphael, and Hotel Internazionale, the first being much better than the latter. <BR> <BR>Other possibility is Hotel Cesari, not right at Piazza di Spagna, rather close to Piazza del Popolo, but still a nice location. <BR> <BR>If you don't mind staying a little southwest from Piazza di Spagna, there's also La Fontanella Borghese, and there are many hotels in Parioli, and at the Pantheon area, which is also handy and historic. Close to the Trevi Fountain, and not far from Piazza di Spagna, there are to sister hotels, the Accademia and White. I just this minute opened my mail and received a brochure for a new 4 star hotel in Rome,opening August 1st, on Via Boncompagni, across from the American Embasy near Via Veneto. Looks great and maybe since it is so new it will not be booked up yet. <BR>A?C, fitness center, sauna.etc. Looks beautiful. <BR>Rose Garden Palace, reservations <BR>SRS World Hotels- 1-800-223-5652 <BR>FAx 011-39-06-481-5608 <BR> <BR>Sorry they didn't list a website

Talia, <BR> I've stayed at the Hassler, Excelsior, and Eden from your list and while I like each just fine, never went back for a 2nd stay. In 1997 I tried the Forum Hotel on recommendation of a good source and have stayed there ever since. I just love the hotel, the location, the staff...and the price is very reasonable (should be within your budget if available). The corner rooms looking down on the Trajan Forum are great for sharing--good size, great "Jane Austen" furniture, two single beds, and oh yeah, that view!

Talia, rather than being on this forum you may want to get on the telephone. <BR> <BR>Most of Rome's more recommendable hotels, particularly those that are not outrageously expensive, are booked up two-four months beforehand, sometimes more, for the peak season, which certainly includes September. <BR> <BR>Many on this forum can give you names of hotels they like. (And you can search the archives and fine the, probably, most desirable 30 hotels in Rome. What NONE of us on the forum, I suspect, can tell you is ... which of these have rooms avaiable, and at prices you want to pay. Only the hotels can tell you that. <BR> <BR>Go to www.venere.it and get a list of Rome's hotels and their telephone numbers, and start phoning. At this late date that's the only way you're going to find the answer to your desperation ... I hope. <BR> <BR>For those who say, "Let's wing it and not bother with reservations" ... perhaps this will be a useful example of what can happen. Are there rooms available in September in Rome? Sure. Many, if any, of the most desirable, best value-for-money rooms? Probably few if any. But no one need sleep in the street ... there are rooms, just not first choice for many. <BR> <BR>twenj
