Delta international to Istanbul

We are flying from the US to Istanbul via Paris. I have a "flight receipt" from Delta with the confirmation number on. Is this all I need to be able to check in for our flights. Especially when coming back from Istanbul will this receipt & number be OK. Last time I flew Delta international as well as the receipt they sent an eTicket which had a bar code on. Yes I called Delta's International customer service but not helpful she first of all told me I needed a passport....yes I have one.....then you will get a boarding pass......she just kept repeating this. I will call again tomorrow to see if I get someone else but..... anyone here?? Thanks so much

Can't you go to the web site and print out a boarding pass with your seat number on it along with all of the flight info? I wouldn't wait until you get to the airport for seat selections.

Oh and if I go to the Air France website it says it has to be done at the airport.

I've flown on Air France with awards tickets issued by Delta, and this is how it worked on those flights as well. Online checkin was not allowed, it had to be done at the Air France counter at the airport. Your passport should be all you need, they will have your record in the system, but print the receipt as well if you want backup in case of a problem. I couldn't select seats in advance for the AF segments on the Delta website, but I was able to get the Air France confirmation number (not the same as the Delta confirmation number) by calling Delta, and knowing that, I was able to get seats assigned via the Air France website (or by calling AF) once they opened seats up for selection.

I fly Delta+KLM, Delta+AF combinations often. Yes, what Delta told you is what happens. You don't even need the confirmation code - if you are dealing with a person. Confirmation code is "sometimes" needed if you use machine check-in.

From U.S. side, this is how it worked for me at the airport, last one just last month. I have already checked-in online 24 hours before with passport numbers.

Machine method:
1. You walk up to the check-in machine. They ask you to scan your passport. I used mine, the one who booked the flights.
2. It asks if ALL your party would be checking in - the default. If you say ok, it asks to scan in ALL the passports.
3. After going through many pages, it eventually coughs out all the boarding pass for the outbound part, two each in your case US-Paris, then Paris-Istanbul.
4. If you have luggage to check-in you have to go to the counter. They really don't like to check you in at the counter unless the machine flagged that you must go to the counter.

Person method:
1. You walk up to the check-in counter. The agent asks for your passport (see it matches what Delta told you.)
2. The agent confirms your itinerary, weighs your luggage, put tag on, and gives you all the boarding passes you need.

Coming back always always seem to require checking in in person at some point even when I have done the online check-in. Again, no confirmation code was needed at the desk. I think you need the code if you don't have Delta skymiles account to which the ticket is attached to. I always log onto the skymiles account to do check-in.

msweg - you mentioned that you could select your seats for the Air France leg of the flights when they opened up ... what was the timing of this? I'm flying Delta ticketed flights to Istanbul in two weeks, returning via Air France to Paris, and so far, unable to make a seat selection on the AF flights on either the Delta or AF web site. Thanks for your help!

You may need a AF agent to make the seat assignments for you. Don't worry about it too much. I fly Delta exclusively and I have had all the issues are experiencing. They are alliance partners but don't have the same procedures, especially with international travel.

@Janetd5 - I think it was a couple of months in advance, but the key was having the AF confirmation number, which you'll need to get from Delta. If you can't do it online, you can call them. I've flown AF twice using Delta awards tickets, and I think the first time I had to call AF to get the seat assignment, but the second time I was able to do it online. This applied only to the transatlantic portion of the trip. The connecting flight within Europe only allowed seat assignment at check in time. Also, both of the times I did this, I had a business class seat on the way from the US to Europe, so it is possible that this won't work for coach seats. Somehow I've completely blanked out the return trips in coach from my mind.

msweg and denisea - Thanks for your information! I finally had a chance to call AF - my 'long haul' leg on AF flying home from Paris to Atlanta has a seat assignment; the short 'within Europe' flights (IST to CDG to RBA; then CMN to CDG ... side trip to Morocco after Istanbul) all require/allow seat assignment at check in. All of my flights are economy - perhaps business class is different. Delta did provide me with the different confirmation code for AF, and I could pull up the flights on the AF web site with their code. All same as on the Delta site ... no way around the AF seat selection rule for short haul, Europe flights!

Business may be different, but that custom is fairly common among a lot of carriers locally in Europe, IME. The same thing happened to me on my Brussels airline flight a few months ago, I couldn't pick a seat in advance. For short flights, I don't really care that much, actually, I think I could pick it when I checked in online in advance.

Our trip to Turkey was the last time we used Delta FF as they have increased the mileage for trips. We made many trips with Delta FF. We also changed our credit card for more liberal travel provisions.

On the flight from IST to JFK, we chose to sit next to the exit door. Ironically ice formed on the INSIDE on the not-so-seal but the flight crew did not seem concerned and offered me an extra blanket.

It's been years ago, but I booked a Delta ticket that included Air France. I joined Flying Blue (the AF club) and was able to go to the Air France website, put in my confirmation number, and pull up my flight, where I was then allowed to select my seats.

I really don't remember all the details of how I did this. Just passing it on.
