Delta has changed our plans for the better I think...need Rome advice :)

Jump to last reply

We booked our tickets a couple of weeks ago for our Septmeber vacation. We were to fly in and out of Milan non stop from Atlanta. We are staying in Lucca for 4 nights, Orvieto for 4 nights then we were still deciding on where to stay nearer the Milan airport for one night. We are traveling with 3 girls ages (then) 7,9 and 13.

Well got an email a couple of days ago that Delta is no longer offering a non stop to Milan. With children (okay and me..I hate flying) I wasn't okay with it. My husband has been saving miles for years. We did 3 full tickets with miles, partial ticket with miles and paid in full for one. I called yesterday and begged for a non stop in and out of Rome instead (those tickets were more $ and 20,000 miles more each so we couldn't do it) They agreed!

We were going to do a day trip to Rome while in Orvieto which we don't need to do anymore. We are thinking cutting Orvieto to 3 nights and then Rome for the last 2 nights. (Still starting in Lucca)

I searched what seemed like all day on the forums yesterday for which area would be best for us to stay in in Rome. Some threads went back to 2000 so not sure if they are still relevant (areas change..maybe not a lot) I thought I had it set on Trastevere but read a couple of unsavory things about the area (homeless milling around, drunks etc..) We will be renting an apartment for 2 nights. (If you stayed at one you love let me know:) )

We would like to be reasonable walking distance to some sights or a quick bus ride. Quieter area at night but not dead (not a loud bar scene since we will be there on a Friday night) restaurants to walk to and gelato of course. Thoughts?

We obviously won't need our car in Rome. What is the best way to dispose of it after Orvieto and not have it be a huge PITA with 3 kids to get into the city. We will hire a service to take us to the airport.

Thank you for your anticipated responses and support :)
