I'm trying to decide whether to take the train on my own to go to Giverny, or one of the bus tours. I love to do the train thing for daytrips out of London, but have never done so in Paris, except for Versailles, which is so easy, as it is on the RER. Also, any advice on daytrips to Chartres, Chantilly, or Fontainbleau? Thanks!

I took the train to Giverny a couple of years ago and it was easy and fun. I took a taxi from the train station to Monet's house and had a wonderful day.
I'm leaving for Paris on May 1 and will be doing a day trip to Chartres. Will let you know how that goes.
Hi Suzie
It's been a few years since I last did it, but as Lynn says, the trip to Giverny is pretty easy. Train stop is Vernon. Vernon can be pretty light on taxis early in the morning but eventually we got one. It is best to go early so you can be there before the bus loads arrive. There is also a bus that goes to Giverny. When you take a taxi out there, if you like, ask for a business card from the taxi driver so you can call one when you want to return to Vernon.
Fontainebleau: Closed on Tues I believe. www.fontainebleau.org
You can take a train from Pariss Gare de Lyon to the Fontainebleau-Avon station, then catch a Cars Verts bus to the chateau.
Chantilly: also closed Tues?
To get there, take a train from Pariss Gare du Nord for
Chantilly-Gouvieux ( the ride is about 35 minutes), then take a taxi or a 30 minute walk to the chateau.
Chartres Cathedral is about a 10 minute walk from the train station.

Lynn and Elaine, thanks for your input.I'll do the train, as it sounds more fun than a tour bus! Also, thanks for info on the other day trips - I'll file it away for the next trip. I think Giverny will be pretty in May.
