Day trips from Salzburg and General Help Needed?

We (traveling with 2 yr old and 5 month old)will be staying for 10 days in Salzburg in early September to see the World Pair Driving Championship and would like some suggestions for day trips. We will have a car and love scenic drives, hiking (although must be easy for the 2 yr old), castles, etc... Any suggestions for Day trips from Salzburg would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions for family friendly places to stay in the area would be great. We are thinking of flying into Munich to save money. Is this a good idea? I guess I need general help for this trip, if you have ANY suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Paige

You sound like my family! We moved to Germany when my oldest was 18 months and my youngest was 4 months old. Anyhow, we have stayed many places throughout Europe since moving here 17 months ago. Although we have not stayed in Salzburg, we did have reservations there last Christmas and had to cancel as my youngest was hospitalized. The following hotel was recommended to me. They have larger rooms and an indoor swimming pool which could be good fun for your toddler.

As far as day trips I know there are some salt mines/caves in the area and then the Berchtesgarden. I want to go and take the Sound of Music tour.

We've actually stayed in Munich (have a hotel recommendation there too) and taken the train to Dachau and visited several things around that city. Let me know if you have any Munich questions.

I haven't been much help but I could hear the intense pleading of a busy mother and thought I'd give you something!

Hallstatt is always a lovely place to visit. From Salzburg, I suggest you take the 158 along the Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee as far as Bad Ischl then head south thru Bad Goisern on to Hallstatt. Without stops, it's probably 1-1/2 to 2 hrs but the scenery is amazing. Once you get to Hallstatt, take one of the electric boat rides on the Lake to get a wonderful perspective on this lovely town.

I haven't done this, but Berchtesgaden would probably be a good day trip also.

I'd vote for Hallstatt too. Closer to Salzburg is Hellbrunn castle which has wonderful gardens and the most extraordinary trick fountains! Near St Wolfgang you can go up the mountain in a funicular ... the ride is fun and the views are spectacular plus there are c ouple of places to eat at the top.

Re: Flying into Munich. That is probably a good idea, since renting a car in Germany is less expensive than in Austria. The drive from MUC to Salzburg is about 2 1/2 hours, all autobahn.

Otherwise, there are flights on Lufthansa/United to Frankfurt with a connecting flight on Tyrolian direkt to Salzburg.

The suggestions of Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, Hellbrunn, St.Wolfgang are good suggestions. However,I wouldn't take the saltmine tour with a 2 year old.

In Salzburg is a puppet theater, your older child would probably enjoy that.

In Berchtesgaden, we took our 2 year o old grandaughter up to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's nest - Hitler's former Teahouse). Great views and hmaburgers! She seemed to enjoy this. An electric boat trip on the Koenigsee is nice for adults, but probably not for a small child. Once you are on the boat, you are committed and can't get off for quite some time. However, they have row boats for rent. I remnember, when we were kids and spent our summers in B'gdn that was always fun.

Some towns have summer sledding (in concrete chutes). I know of Saalfelden having one, but that may be a bit far. Check around where else. It's a safe and fun thing to do.

I don't know if your 2 year old is a boy or girl. If you are in Munich, take him/her to the Deutsche Museum and see all the trains and planes.

You will find, that 10 days won't be enough. Have fun.

Here are some ideas -
Drive over to Berchtesgaden to the Rossfeld Strasse - here you can stop frequently for the 2 year old. Bring a picnic lunch! Lots of cows around on the high alpine slopes until the end of September.

The Konigsee Lake would be good and I agree with the previous poster not to take the boat. The 2 yr old will go nuts...it's a long ride.

There are 2 outdoor swimming pools "Hallenbad" outside of Berchtesgaden, an easy drive from Salzburg

There is a zoo just on the outskirts of Salzburg - it's small but very interesting

Take the chair lift from the Jennerbahn to the summit....if you think the 2 year old can handle it. Great views and a nice restaurant up top.

Have a picnic lunch near the Jennerbahn and watch the hang gliders landing in the field (mostly on weekends and good days)
Drive over to the Hintersee, rent a boat and/or feed the ducks.
Every warm afternoon, there is a free concert in the Kurhaus gardens in the center of B'gaden....

If you don't need to stay in Salzburg itself, you can probably get a much better deal staying outside of the city.

Good luck!~

Berchtesgaden and the surrounding region is indeed beautiful, and can easily be done as a pleasant daytrip from Salzburg as its about 15 miles away by car. Since you mentioned enjoying scenic drives, you may want to visit the town of Ramsau, a pleasant little town with a beautiful onion-domed church. Maria Gern is also nearby and has a great onion-domed church as well. The drives from Berchtesgaden to both Maria Gern and Ramsau are beautiful, but its hard to go wrong anywhere in the area.

Hallstatt is also very beautiful, as is the entire Salzkammergut region, and the drive to Hallstatt from Salzburg is a beautiful scenic drive (once you get off the Autobahn). We really enjoyed a cute little town, St. Gilgen, on the Wolfgangsee on our way to Hallstatt.

Enjoy your trip. You will have a wonderful time!
