Day trips from Rothenburg

Can anyone suggest a day trip from Rothenburg, we will be heading there 11 Dec to 14 Dec? We will have a car so traveling shouldn't be a probable unless it snows!!

Nurnberg and Bamberg are two possibilities that could be done together.

Other towns along the Romantic Road, such as Nordlingen and Dinkelsbuhl are even closer.

You could drive north or south on the Romance Road... and explore the other small towns. I've heard south is nicer - towns like Dinkelsbuhl (sp?)... though we went north and enjoyed it. We visited Winklesheim (sp?) and it was lovely... nice lunch, old square, very nice palace.

Depending on your time and interests, I would second the drive to Bamberg-especially if you take the route outside of Wurzburg (I think it is B-22).

We really pleasantly surprised by Nuremberg's old town and really enjoyed it.

Wurzburg makes a great daytrip. It's about a 45 minute drive, if I recall correctly. There are some pretty good churches there, a nice Rathauskeller for lunch, and an interesting fortress on the other (north?) side of the river. But best of all is the Residenz, which to me is worth a whole trip alone. My favorite palace in Europe. Check opening times for December though.

Never beeen to Nuremberg, but Bamberg is very beautiful. If you go to Bamberg, be sure to see Vierzehnheiligen, a magnificent late Baroque - early Rococo pilgrimage church. It's north of Bamberg, toward Coburg.

Have fun!

A couple of summers ago (or is it 3 summers now?) we spent a couple of days in the Rothenburg area. Saw all we needed to of Rothenburg on the first day. So headed out on the road the second day--had a very nice drive up to Coburg (north of Bamberg). We had already stayed in Bamberg so we didn't stop there again, but agree with above that Bamberg is one of the most pleasant and interesting small cities in Bavaria.

We were in Rothenburg last week and made daytrips to Bad Wimpfen (75mins), Bamberg (90mins), Dinkelsbuhl (30mins), and Nuremberg (70mins). I could have spent longer in each of these places, especially Bamberg and Nuremberg.

If you're interested in the Christmas Markets, I thought Bad Wimpfen had the most original offerings and few tourists.

Enjoy!

I guess it depends on your interests and how far you want to day-trip but Heidelberg is less than 100 miles, Fussen (Neuschwanstein) is about 125 and Munich is just over 100 miles.
