Day trips from Positano
We are staying four nights in Positano in September - A few questions regarding day trips.
Is a private driver worth the 400E for a coastal tour - to Amalfi/Ravello or can you see/do just as much yourself via the buses?
What is the best way to get to Pompeii - again private or bus?
The hike for the Path of the Gods - I know there have guides for that hike - is one needed? can you get to the start via public transportation?
Thanks for your input.

HI dw,
>Is a private driver worth the 400E for a coastal tour - to Amalfi/Ravello <
We didn;t think so, just took the bus.
>What is the best way to get to Pompeii - again private or bus?
We took the bus to Sorrento and then the Circumvesuviana train. Your exit is "Pompei Scavi".
>The hike for the Path of the Gods - can you get to the start via public transportation?<
Yes, but I don't remember how.
Enjoy your visit.
Thanks for your input.

No, you do not need a guide for that hike. There are books detailing the route, including the Sunflower guide (prices on Amazon vary a lot; if you wan to buy, keep checking the price) and this one, which any people like more than Sunflower:

Hotels often have details of the walk, and you can find information on this website:

400 euro sounds a bit high, but it depends on the length of the tour and the route; not long ago I posted a link with prices for private drivers on the Amalfi Coast:

SITA bus easy the way to go for me cheap 400 euro
for a driver is a giant rip off...
Hike is easily self guided like the Cinque Terre
no guide really needed.
Pompeii Capri nearby safe easy to self guide.
Good info on www.fodors.com Gold Guide Italy.
Careful research yields better experiences have fun,

Here's another idea for you, and a pretty fun way to spend the day...

We took the Amalfi Coast excursion (scroll down a bit), and enjoyed it. I know this isn't an actual answer to any of your questions, but... oh well.
