Day trips from Epernay

We are two couples traveling to Paris in the Fall. We plan on spending a week in Paris and then renting a car and going to Epernay to the champagne caves. We would also like to go to Normandy and Mont St. Michel as day trips. When we leave Paris we would like to just make one change in hotels if possible and go from there. We would probably spend three nights in Epernay. Is this a good plan?

Mont-Saint-Michel (which is in Normandy) is about a 3-1/2 hour journey from Paris, whether by car, bus or train/bus combo. That's about 7 hours of your day just traveling. People do it but I wouldn't want to do it. If by seeing Normandy you mean the D-Day beaches that is about 3 hours by car from Paris. People do both of these journeys as day trips from Paris and there are tour companies that offer such trips but at least half of your day is going to be spent traveling and not sightseeing. I think both these trips are better done as overnight trips.

You can't do these as day trips from Epernay since Epernay is east of Paris and is over a 5 hour drive from Mont-Saint-Michel. If you want to spend 3 days outside of Paris you should choose between either seeing Epernay and the champagne region or heading to Normandy. Not trying to rain on your picnic, just trying to give you some useful info to think about.

Have you been to Paris before? That might help determine how many day trips to do.

I took the train from Pairs to Rheims, visited the cathedral and the Taitinger wine cellar, had lunch, as part of a day trip. The train also goes to Epernay.

Is the car just to get there? A train could be an easier choice if you are simple driving to cellar and back.

Thanks so much for your useful info. Battlebus has a day tour from Paris to the Normandy Beaches which we definitely want to see apart from Paris. Do we need to spend 3 days or nights in Epernay? We are interested in the champagne caves! Of course, we can do Rheims too. Should we make Mont. St. Michel a must see? As you can see, we are in the planning stages. I appreciate your input.

If you mean seeing Normandy and Mt St michel as day trips from Epernay - no - that's impossible - they are in completely different directions.

If it were me I would rent a car onlaving Paris and spend 1 or 2 nights in Normandy the drive to Epernay and spend a couple of night there. (NOt sure what you would do for 3 full days.)

Michel, thanks for your reply. I have been to Paris before but my spouse has not. We are in the planning stages and your comments have been very helpful. It is appreciated.
