Another question about our Edinburgh trip. We want to visit St. Andrews and the Fife fishing villages one day and Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace the Wallace Monument the next. What I can't decide is whether to rent a car or take a conducted tour, Rabbies most likely. Their St. Andrews tour covers the places we want to see, but the other tour includes Stirling and Loch Lomond, but not the other sites. Can someone tell me about Loch Lomond? Maybe we'd do St. Andrews with Rabbies and the other on our own, what do you suggest?

We took the train from Edinburgh to Stirling for the castle. Easy peasy. I would take a taxi to the Monument after walking to the castle. The monument is about 3 miles away.
Linlithgow Palace is half a mile from the railway station. It would be pushing it to see all three in the same day if you are a careful tourer, even by car. Stirling is pretty interesting.
Just hop on a train to Linlithgow. There and back to Edinburgh would just take a few hours - you could be back in Edinburgh by lunch time. (it is only a 20 minute train ride)
As Ackislander says -- Stirling is easy peasy.
St Andrews is easy by train/bus, but the fishing villages would be best by car. I probably would just take the Rabbies tour and skip renting a car for one day.
The link to Rabbies that I've bookmarked.

Yes, guess we'll just take the Rabbies tour to St. Andrews and the fishing villages and the train to Stirling, will try and fit in Linlithgow the same day, even if it means we get back late. Thanks for your input
