Day trips from Dubrovnik and Hvar advice

Hi everyone,

Just after some advice on Croatia. My husband and I (both 25) are travelling there next year (end of July to beginning of August) for 8 nights. I wanted to maybe do 4 nights in Hvar and 4 nights in Dubrovnik. Is that a good amount of time to split between the two places?

Also just wondering what day trips are good from Dubrovnik? I've looked at Mostar, Montenegro, Lokrum, Peljjasic Penninsula, Korcula Island and National Park Mljet (I know that's heaps) and I'm finding it hard to narrow it down. We like experiencing all different things on holidays so that includes site seeing, cultural experiences, islands, beach, nature, etc. Not fussed on what we do, just want it to be a great experience.

Should I do less nights in Hvar to squeeze in an extra day trip in Dubrovnik?

Thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated

Re: your allocation of time -- it really depends on what you want to see and do!

For Dubrovnik itself, 1.5 days is sufficient for many people; you'll need extra time if you are using it as a base for day trips and can plan accordingly once you decide on what day trips to take.

Hvar Town itself doesn't take long, so again, it depends on what you want to do once there. If you want a lot of time on beaches, relaxing, maybe visiting a winery or two or getting out onto the water, 4 nights could serve you well. FWIW, I thought Hvar Town beautiful, but found it WAY too upscale and party-hearty for my tastes; I was glad I only gave it an afternoon. JMO.

As for the day trips you are considering from Dubrovnik:
- IMO, Mostar is far better seen with an overnight stop, as it can be very hot and ridiculously crowded during the day, and can be absolutely magical after day-trippers leave.
- Montenegro (and Kotor in particular) can make for a lovely day trip from Dubrovnik, IMO.
- Lokrum is a lovely place, too; in giving you an estimate of the time "required" for Dubrovnik, I already included a 1/2 day there.
- I'm glad I visited Korcula, but again, was glad that I spent a night there. If you are willing to consider a night there, and the timing works out, you might enjoy seeing the moresca -- I believe it is only performed on Thursday evenings, but that could have changed, so be sure to check if interested.
- I haven't been to the Pelijasic Peninsula or Mljet yet; I'm sure they are lovely.

So like or or not ;-), all these destinations have a lot to commend them and you have some very difficult choices to make. The good news: No bad choices.

I trust you have a really good guidebook or two? Of the half dozen I used when planning my time in the area, I thought the Rough Guide most useful.

Hope that helps!
