I am planning to be in Dortmund at the end of March. My research has told me that there isn't a whole lot to do there. I will have a fair amount of free time and was wondering if anyone could recommend a day trip I could take to somewhere that has a little more to offer. Any help much appreciated.

Without regard to the mode of travel, you could go to any number of places. Some things I've found interesting:
-Cruise on the Rhine
-Visit to the little finger of Holland that includes Maastricht and Valkenburg, two very interesting cities.
-The city of Munster not very far north.
Those are the only ones in my bag of experience that I would recommend. Good luck.
