Day trips by train from Salzburg to Innsbruck or Munich?

Day trips by train from Salzburg to Innsbruck or Munich?
Will be in Salzburg for 4 days in March ('02) as part of a longer itin. Plan to spend 2 of the 4 in Salzburg and then day tripping on Eurail pass the other two.<BR><BR>Friends have told me that Munich is "Too big and commercial" to get much enjoyment out of a day trip (but my husband hasn't been there and wants to go) and they have suggested Innsbruck and on up to the Garmish area or down to Hallstat (sp?)... Any suggestions?<BR><BR>How is the crystal shopping in Innsbruck on Swarovski... prices way much cheaper?<BR><BR>Thanks, Pat

I liked Munich when I was there in September for 4 and half days. Like any city, it has its size and its quirks. I think it depends on what you want to see and do. The clock on the Rathaus is worth a visit. The Residenz is a showplace. The technical museum is worth a trip to Europe.<BR>I did not find Innsbruck to be that much of a bonanza. The Golden Roof was a mite small. The Residenzplatz of the Hapsburgs was a slice of history, if you like that sort of thing.<BR><BR>Innsbruck is not all that close to Salzburg I might add!!<BR>Your best travel time is 2 hours.<BR>

Pat,<BR><BR>Bob is right. I enjoyed Munich much more than Innsbruck. Garmish is tourist central, but all in all a nice town. Hallstat is a very quaint, beautiful town on a lake in the hills/mountains. If you like that kind of place, go to Hallstat. Make sure you plan a whole day, it is not the easiest place to get to by train. Also, when you arrive at the town, you are not there yet. Get down to the dock and hop on the boat right away, otherwise you will only see Hallstat from a distance.<BR><BR>Greg

I like Salzburg, and I have been there 3 times. The fortress on the hill; some of the sights of Old Town; the Marionette Theater; a concert or two;, the summer palace of Markus Sittikus known as Schloss Hellbrunn; and the Festspielhaus, the home of the summer music festival, are all interesting.<BR>But, Munich has more to offer. <BR>I plan to be back in Munich next September to see some things I simply did not have time for this most recent trip.<BR>As I said, 4 days went like greased lightening!<BR>

Hi Pat:<BR>Just returned from a 12 day trip to Vienna, Salzburg & Graz. I found three days in Salzburg tight so I would travel the countryside if I were spending two days in Salzburg, Hallstatt(which I missed) is supposed to be lovely and a visit to the salt mines. I would suggest Graz but the train ride is nearly 4 hours, so you would lose the better part of a day back and forth.

While I am not a big fan of Munich, there is enough to do there for at least 3 full days. The art museum is fairly good, the technology museum is very interesting, etc.<BR><BR>The issue is that the trip to Munich is two hours each way. That is four hours of travel for a day trip.

Thanks to all who responded t my question....<BR><BR>As a "follow-up", if we daytrip from Salzburg up to Munich... what are the "must do's" for a single day visit and is the train station close enough to the "old town district" for walking or is it better to use public transportation of some kind?<BR><BR>Thanks much for your input,<BR><BR>Pat

Munich is a much larger city than Salzburg, so it depends on where you want to go and what you want to see.<BR>If you like art, the Alte Pinokotek is worth the effort. Nymphenburg Palace is interesting, perhaps more for the porcelain sales room than for the palace itself. (that should get a little debate going). It is out on the west side of the city and you need public transportation or a cab to get there. <BR>The museum of science and technology is in a class by itself. The English Gardens in March will not be in bloom.<BR>The Residenz down town on Odeonsplatz is worth the effort. It is a gaudy reminder of how monarchs lived in luxury. <BR>If you want to go to Nyphenburg, street car number 17 takes you there from the north side of the main train station. (Frommer's guide by the way is not correct; I learned that the hard way last summer.) <BR>You can walk to the Rathaus from the train station and to the Residenz.<BR>The Viktualienmarkt is near the Rathaus.<BR>But the science and technology museum is a little ways away on an island in the river. <BR>I think you will enjoy Munich, although it is certainly not Paris or Vienna. I liked my visit there, but it always helps to have friends in the area who know the city well.<BR>If you overnight it, we stayed in Schwabing at the Hotel Astoria. (And we are going back there again by choice.)<BR>The Astoria is small but charming.<BR>It has one drawback, however. It is just off of Leopoldstrasse and there is this incredible Italian ice cream parlor just down the street with huge servings of delicious stuff and ...<BR>

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bertchsgaden (Hitler's Eagle's Nest). It is a nice little town and the ride up to the now restaurant in that gold and mirror plated elevator is nice and the view spectacular. It is very close to Salzburg and you could include it with other areas for one daytrip.
