The Sierra Nevada in April will still have snow. The season usually ends at the end of the month, but you should be able to vista Las Alpujarras (www.alpujarras.eu) on a day trip from Granada or Málaga.

You can take the bus from the Granada bus station to Pradollano if you want to go up an play in the snow and take some pictures. It's about a one-hour trip. It should be €9/person, round-trip.

I check the pictures that looks like what we want, great !
I am trying to spend one day for the Alhambra palace, 1 day for Nerja and Friligiana and then 1 day to check the snow !! Now I found 3 nights in Granada is not enough !!!

I am booking hotel at Acera De Darro, hopefully not too far from the center

Sorry for hijacking this thread banana muffin, we too are hoping to do a day trip to sierra Nevada mountains in end april..either as a day trip from Granada on on the way from nerja to granada.

Robert, we have a car, so would you recommend doing the trip on our way from nerja to granada? the kids are looking forward to a day of snow fun!

Is there a recommended scenic route to take/ villages to visit for snow activities etc..should we head to Pradellano?

Is the sierra nevada villages different to Las Alpujarras?? Pampaneira, Bubion, Capileira.??

would appreciate if you could shed some light and which areas to go to.

We can allocate one whole day and hope to get a car for this trip.

You can do it by car, but the skiing season is still on and you will probably encounter some traffic up and down. Myself, I would go by bus and let someone else do the driving.

I visited Las Alpujarras (which is a part of the Sierra Nevada) a few years ago, taking a bus from Granada to Capiliera. (Capiliera is the uppermost of 3 villages in the Poquiera Gorge, the lower villages being Pampaneira and Bubion.) As I recall, it was about 3 hours each way, so I didn't visit as a day trip -- I stayed overnight in Capiliera and hiked a bit through the gorge. Beautiful area!

BUT (from one of my previous posts on this area):

"The bus ride to get there (from Granada) was terrifying, with a seemingly endless stretch of blind, sharply switchbacking curves, but the area is lovely IMO. ... At first, I thought I was really lucky because I had gotten the front seat on the right-hand side of the bus. But that just meant that I felt like I was hanging off the road on many of those turns! I kept telling myself to go ahead and look because the scenery was stunning and if I was to die, I might as well enjoy the view, but every time I looked, it was so frightening that I reflexively turned away. And as though the road wasn't bad enough, my driver on the way in played really irritating music at full volumn and spent most of the trip talking - with his hands. I wondered whether I could bring myself to board the bus when it was time to leave, or whether I'd have to choose between hiking out or moving in! BTW, the ride out was much less terrifying. And I don't think that was entirely due to the large (very large!) glass of beer I had before boarding. I chose a seat part-way back and this driver seemed much more attentive to the road, which makes sense because drivers do generally have more control going up than coming down."

thnx kja!!
does this means driving there is a bad idea..??!! I read trip report where they had visited las Alpujarras as a day trip from granada..
but as it seems its in between the coast(we will be staying one night in nerja as a break journey between Ronda and Granada), I thought it may be a good idea to explore sierra nevada on our way from nerja to granada rather than backtracking again.? we are hoping to drop off the car in granada.

does this make sense?

the links above mention 'Pradellano?' as the ski/snow place..should we head that way for the snow fun for kids!! it also mentions bubion and Capiliera as villages closeby..

Sking is not on the plan..just snow boarding or playing with snow would be a treat for the kids! would you be able to point out where we can do this?

I must admit that I'm puzzled by the idea of visiting Nerja as a "break" between Ronda and Granada -- I believe that stopping in Nerja will add an hour of driving time to what would otherwise be only a 2 hour trip. And adding Capiliera to a trip from Nerja to Granada will add more than 2 (terrifying) hours to your driving time from Nerja to Granada, which would otherwise be just about 1'20". But perhaps I am misunderstanding your plans.

Personally, I don't think something that requires a 6-hour round trip drive to be a reasonable day trip, especially if the drive is stressful. Just my opinion.

I don't think there is anything else I can tell you about the area. I trust that you have a few GOOD guidebooks - they should prove invaluable.

Good luck!

I've only got a Lonely planet!..and obviously need to get something better as there is absolutely next to nothing on sierra Nevada or las Alpujarras.

the reason to stop in Nerja is because we wanted to experience a bit of the Mediterranean beach with the rugged cliffs etc. and this was recommended as the best beach town in the area between Ronda and Granada..as it has a smaller town feel opposed to Malaga.(have i got this wrong?)

As we have absolutely no kids activities planned during this trip..the snow day is to be their treat! And also sierra nevada's stunning scenery will be a change from the rest of the experience in spain..so that is the thinking behind sierra nevada!

welcome input from expert travelers to the area

<stop in Nerja is because we wanted to experience a bit of the Mediterranean beach with the rugged cliffs etc>

Too cold to swim in for most people in April, but nine small and large beaches among the cliffs in pictoresque Nerja: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2622/...de6a8146_o.jpg

Perhaps have the famous paella in Ayo's right on the Burriana beach. Same procedure for lunch every day since 1969. Very popular, and Sunday lunch here is a highlight of the week for many local families. All kinds of food and much for the kids: http://www.ayonerja.com/chiringuito_en.html

Here are three of my favourite restaurants in Nerja which also will be perfect for kids, outdoor terrace etc.

La Marina is as good as you get a no fuss freiduría in all of Andalucía. Have splurged here on several occasions. Next to a small playground: http://www.guideofnerja.com/pages/gu.../marina_en.htm

Delicious Andalucian food and great atmosphere at El Pulguilla, just off landmark Balcón de Europa. Great meat dishes as well such as the Málaga region speciality Carne con tomate, meat skewers, grilled sausages, hamburgers etc: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...Andalucia.html

In both La Marina and El Pulguilla there are delicious free tapas to chose with every glass of whatever in the bar area for some 1,50-2€, as in most places in Nerja outside the most touristy part of town.

Excellent pasta and pizza at El Vitaliano, run by Italians. Consistently great food through at least some 30 visits during the past eleven years. http://ristorantevitaliano.com/us.html
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...Andalucia.html

And you should visit the spectacular Nerja caves just outside town. Lived people here some 40 000 years ago.

And perhaps a visit to the Donkey sanctuary in Nerja would be a winner with the kids? http://www.nerjadonkeysanctuary.com/
