Trying to plan a trip to Paris and it will be the first time for my husband so we are planning at least a week stay in Paris but would like to see Normandy. We can certainly add a few days for some excursions. Is the day trip to Normandy adequate or do we need to go and stay in the area?

The day trip is a very very long day, but probably fine for seeing the beaches. You won't see "Normandy". We loved spending time there in addition to our Paris trip that year.
We have done it both ways. If you can only spare one day, then still do it. The last time we stayed a couple nights in Bayeux and that was much nicer since we were not as rushed and such. I would suggest looking at a tour. The first time we went, for the day, we had a private driver. The next time we took a tour with Battlebus, but they are scaling back now and I have read that our guide, Allan Bryson, is doing his own tours. Battlebus got great reviews, and our guide was great, so I wouldn't hesitate to go with any of them.
If you just want to see the invasion beaches it can be done (briefly) as a very long day trip from Paris by bus. If you actually want to see some of Normandy you will need to spend several nights there.
