Good evening
Our trip to Italy rapidly approacheth. Part of our visit will be back to Lake Como for 5 nights.
Odds are we will take part of one day to explore the reaches up above Menaggio and over to Lake Lugano.
I know there is a funicular and a lakeside promenade (and that would be right in Lugano itself, correct?). In addition to visiting Lugano we would like to just enjoy the scenery by driving around the mountains above Lake Como.
Any last minute tips of must-do things to see, do or eat?
Mille Grazie!
Day trip to Lugano from Lake Como (and poking around the mountain roads)

Go north and have lunch in Soglio---you will like it.
I have been researching Lugano since we will be there in Sept. and I think this link has some pretty comprehensive info about the lifts and what else to do in Lugano

Thanks Bob
We have visited Soglio before, it was on the trip when I brought home my BMW. Agreed - it's beautiful. We also enjoyed driving the Maloja pass.
I doubt we will go that far on this trip but if we had a few more days we would...
SDP - thank you for the link, that lays it out nicely!
A few years ago when we stayed in Menaggio, we took a driving tour into the mountains west of the town through Carlazzo. The tourist office had a booklet detailing various driving tours and we chose one; unfortunately, their website no longer lists the driving tours but they may have a booklet in the office. I have a few details in my trip report; we drove higher and higher onto narrower and narrower roads; it was quite beautiful.
Are you staying in Menaggio? If so, I have a restaurant that I do not recommend: Vecchia Menaggio. I have some restaurant details in my trip report.

Hi ekscrunchy!
I've already mined your report for my printout to go in my carryon!
I also found a slim book recently and spent this morning reading pertinent sections:
http://www.amazon.com/Sunflower-Landscapes-Italian-Lakes-Countryside/dp/1856912345
It details about 5 driving tours (including the one you mentioned in your report, or at least part of it - after Lugano it goes through the Val Intelvi to Argegno before heading back up) as well as 30+ walks. I'm thrilled that it has a really good detail about how to get to the little white church above Griante called San Martino. Many of my photos have this little church and I've always wanted to walk up to it.
Finally - I wholeheartedly agree with your report's assessment of Menaggio. The food there is crap. At least the places we've tried. No doubt there must be something decent there, but given that we know of other places to go (and new places to try per your report) elsewhere we won't bother with Menaggio food (other than gelato).
We are staying in Lenno. This is trip number 4, and it will be our third time staying at Albergo Lenno. Love it, love Lenno. We also liked the Eremo Gaudio for the views. Some other trip we will try some other hotel, but the Albergo Lenno suits us fine - the bonus is their swimming pool which was a must in July. It feels like going home, now.
