Day Trip to Dijon

We'll be in Paris in 3 weeks, though unplanned, given an opportunity, we decided to go ahead even though we'll just be staying for 6 nights. This is our 3rd trip to France. Out of those 6 nights, we're planning to take day trips to Reims and Dijon (also considering Versailles and Giverny). I am having 2nd thought with Dijon as the Dijon-Paris TGV comes back midnight/early morning plus, of course, being last minute, the fare is higher (about E145 for 2 people). Will appreciate it if anyone can share your Dijon experience. Is it a good idea/day trip? I would love to experience the Dijon food market but I expect to hit at least 2 food markets in Paris. If not Dijon, which day trip then Thank you.

Myda, My daughter and I did a day trip to Dijon last year and it was well worth the time and money. The city is beautiful and so is the market! We stopped at the tourist center for a map and followed the markers through town and finished our day with a Kir Royale at the little hotel just before the TGV station. We took the 7:30 am train out of Paris and a 6:30 pm train back and it was the perfect length of time. Hope you enjoy your trip.

We were in Dijon for 4 days and found it charming. The food market and surrounding stalls are very interesting. One day we did the 'owl walk' (which is what I believe Jo-Ron is talking about). It's a self-guided tour, so you can stop, browse, eat/drink, as often as you like. There's a tourist bureau outside the train station where they'll give you the owl walk map/guide. Then just follow the map, looking for the little brass owls embedded it the sidewalk and read the guide as you go. We really enjoyed it because it gave us a chance to see bits of the city we would have otherwise missed but it wasn't so heavy-handed that we felt obligated to abide by it completely.
Have a wonderful time.

Myda I'm very happy you chose my town for a day trip
I checked the SNCF website and found (on the 12th Oct Tuesday market day)a round trip for 2 at 97€ (dep 7h58 return 18h58) You'll have plenty of time to enjoy the market, have a nice meal and follow the "Owl's trail" http://tinyurl.com/2vysz2f as Jo did during the afternoon.
You'll only scratch the surface but it can be a good start for further longer trips in Burgundy.
One of the tourist offices is just outside Dijon train station so don't forget to ask for the brochure before heading to the historic centre. There is a second TO in the ducal palace (entrance in rue des Forges). I cannot resist to show your their lattest video about Dijon http://tinyurl.com/2uv3hrj
Welcome and have fun!

Spent a lovely day in Dijon. We were staying at a vineyard between Dijon and Baune and not coming from Paris. The market and city squars were excellent

coco, I love you dearly but please, please stop posting that video! If I'd known it was going to be on here forever, I'd have worn a bag over my head!

Ok, I just watched it again and it's not as bad a I remembered. Just my French...!

What's funny is that we're wearing exactly the same two jackets here that we were wearing in Dijon that day. I really must go clothes shopping!

Thanks, everyone esp. Coco....I tried again after a few hours and got another price (I guess they do change, you just have to be patient), this time it's E106: 2nd class for the outbound and 1st class for the inbound (about E4 diff. between the 1st and 2nd).

I found this post interesting as I'm considering a day trip to Dijon when I'm in Paris in a few weeks. Can anyone tell me if the large open food market is open most days. Thinking of visiting on a Tuesday in early March. Is that a good day of week for the sights etc.? Thanks.

Tuesday is a good day since the market is on Tuesdays Fridays and Saturdays. Keep in mind that except Magnin museum which is a private museum and worth a visit, all national museums like the Fine arts, the Burgundian life museums are closed.
Another video of a small part of Dijon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_rNv6TwNNk
