Day trip to AC - too much?

We will arrive in Rome, pick up the car, drive to Tuscany for a week, then Florence three days, train to Rome three days. Don't want to be redundant with questions but is it possible to drive our friends to AC.....from our base in Tuscany. I was blessed enough several years ago to see AC I would love my friends to see it. We are going in 2nd week in September so would hope that traffic would be lighter. We have our villa for a week, it would not be so practical but would it be more doable to pack a little overnight bag and spend the night.......thanks

Hi R,

If you go to www.viamichelin.com and enter "Florence to Positano" you will find that it is 5 hr each way.

A day trip to the Ac from Tuscany is certainly possible but there are a lot of possible things I wouldn't do in a million years. This is one of them. And the traffic in September is pretty bad.

How far is your villa from Florence? Could you visit Florence with day trips and use the Florence time for the AC? I think it is way too long a day from Tuscany for a day trip to AC. If you do go, do it as an overnight. I also love the AC and think it is one of the most beautiful areas of the world.

One other thought. I have not been there (pictures are great though and other people love it), but you may be closer to CT and might consider that rather than the AC. That would give you a great coast line and a new area for all of you.

The AC is wonderful - but IMHO the main reasons to go are Pompeii, Capri and touring the small towns down the coast. You can drive from Florence to AC and back in one day - but not really do any of these things. You would have to stay overnight to do even one.

IMHO I would make a choice and not try to stuff too many places in too little time.

agree with all of you, and I have looked at the michelin map to take us from Chianciano Terme to the area and so much closer than AC. This would give me a chance to see Carrera, I will have to see if the other would like to see Pisa, I don't but we could stop that way. What place would we focus on since we have a car? One of the friends has a bit of walking issue and I know this is an area for walkers but is there an doable village to see the coastline, have a nice lunch and hang out before drive back to LaFoce. Would not be interested in a crowded beach scene - Vernazza may work. Your thoughts?

Sorry but your idea of a day trip from La Foce to the Cinque Terre is equally impractical. It reminds me of the folks in the movies who drive all day to the mountains, take a photo and then have to return. What's the point? You are trading an impractical trip to the AC for one which will take between 3+ hrs and 4+ hrs one way--to either Carrara (which takes a fair amount of time to go into the quarries, town, outdoor museums etc) or Vernazza (for ambiance in a hurry?).

Your car will come in handy for all sorts of day trips out of La Foce--a never ending list. If you want to experience the coast, go and stay there. I think you will cheat yourself by spreading yourselves too thin and driving all the time.

I realize what you are saying....but there are lots of posters who wouldn't think of driving from Menerbes to St Tropez, have lunch, do a bit of people watching with the boats coming in, shop and get in the car and drive back to Menerbes...we did and we thought it was fun. I would imagine that going through the quarries would take too much time, agree on that, so that is out. Millions of people drive to the Grand Canyon, take a picture and leave, we drove to stonehedge took a picture and left, I just thought the distance was not that far, but perhaps the traffic and road conditions are an issue. Perhaps we are back to driving to AC with our toothbrushes and a change of underwear and just take a picture. Getting a hotel this late may be another hiccup.
