Day Trip From Stuttgart

I thought the wife and I would take a day trip from Stuttgart to Schonau am Konigsee to see the monastary. My plan is to leave the hotel about 0800 taking A8 towards Munich. The A8 seems to intersect E52/A99 as a route around Munich and then picks up below Munich as E54/A8. We would take that route past Chiemsee until we were around the village of Siegsdorf where it looks like we could take 306 south until it intersects 305 and 305 into Schonau. My concern is getting around Munich without encountering a stau. Any ideas? Would this take longer than 1 day? I will have a rental and will be traveling around the 8th of April. Weather?

Thanks
Gary

Sorry, Gary, but if you really want to do this as a daytrip, it is a crazy idea. Driving time will be at least 4 hours, easily more, since the risk of congestion is high, practically anywhere on your route. Weather will not be an issue.

This is a pretty far for a day. Have you run out of other things to see around Stuttgart? Like a trip to Schloss Lichtenstein?

The A8 is still being upgraded on many sections between Stuttgart and Munich, so you can expect many speed limits at 80kph and a probability for traffic jams at any time of the day. This should be more of a concern than the A99.
The A99 around Munich can be problematic during rush hours on the Eastern section between A9 and A8 East.
As a day trip I think it's too much.

Thanks for the information. That is why I like asking the questions on this forum. What about a day trip to Zurich? We already plan on a day trip to Strassboug France, Baden-Baden and 2 local days around Stuttgart to see the zoo, downtown Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg and such.

Zurich? Even if it were a daytrip, what do you want to do in Zurich?
There are some great things to do right around Stuttgart. Their museums are excellent. The Staatgalerie and the Mercedes Benz museums are not only hallmarks of architecture but the museums themselves are worth you time.

You are right about Stuttgart. I was stationed there for 3 years but my wife has never been to Europe. We will have 7 days in Germany with a rental car and are basing ourselves out of Stuttgart. She has always wanted to see Switzerland and I know Greyline Tours has a 3.5 hour tour of Zurich. I thought it might be an easier drive then to Konigsee

Lake Constance/ Bodensee is an easy day trip from Stuttgart.
You can/should include Schaffhausen with the Rhine falls to get a bit of Swiss experience included.
Just make sure to avoid Swiss motorways since those require a yearly toll sticker which would probably make no sense for a day trip.

Thanks for the information. So far we have a trip to Strasbourg, a trip to Rothenburg ob de Tauber, local time in Stuttgart with trips to Ludwigsburg, the zoo, the museums and the shopping strasse. We will include a trip to the Bodensee and see the Rhine falls.

Thanks
Gary
