I'll be staying in Sevilla for four nights, would it be unreasonable to make a day trip to the coast? Renting a car is out of the question, so I'd rely on either bus or train. Has anyone tried this before? If it helps, after I'm in Sevilla for four nights, I'll be traveling to Madrid.

Relax and enjoy Sevilla. There is a lot to see and do. Why take the time traveling to the coast and back when you could spend that time exploring a great city.

it is possible to do that on the bus. i think they run to a couple different beaches during the summer. however, i have to agree with robert that your time would be best spent exploring sevilla. i was there for 3 weeks and only visited the bech twice. there is SO much to see and do.

Please don't let anyone send you on a guilt trip because THEY needed to spend more time in the city than you may feel you have to..it's YOUR trip, enjoy it as you wish.

Which 'Coast?' You could go by train to el Puerto de Santa Maria or Cadiz (Costa de la Luz - Atlantic Coast) or by bus to Sanlucar de Barrameda or even the beaches near Huelva easily on a day-trip.

Costa del Sol (Malaga, Torremolinos, Marbella, etc.) is farther away, but you still might be able to make it there and back in a day. It would be 'tight!'

Buses to the south leave from el Prado de San Sebastian Bus station; buses going east or west generally depart from Plaza de Armas Bus station.

I took a 9 AM Damas SA Motorcoach from Sevilla (Plaza de Armas) to Huelva and a 'por pueblos' bus Huelva to Playa de Mazagon. It took me a total of 2 hours.

I ask about the day trip just because I'm curious about the option. Doesn't mean when I get to Sevilla I won't fall in love and end up stayin the entire time(especially during the Bienal), but I just want to have other options in case I decide it's something I would like to do.

I honestly don't have a specific beach in mind, and so I'm very open to suggestions. I'm just looking for a little excursion to see the Spanish coast, and I'm not picky about exactly which beach to go to. About how much does a trip on the bus cost? Looking for something mid-budget. Also, don't know if all the beaches charge admission or not. I would rather something a little quieter. Hope this info helps narrow it down a bit. Thank you again to everyone for your help!

You can take a bus or train to Cadiz from Sevilla. It takes about an hour or an hour an half by train. Either option is not expensive. Make sure if you go by bus, go with the one that is direct.

In Cadiz, you can try Playa Victoria. If going by bus, you can ask to be dropped of at a station in new city. Or just take a regular city bus to Playa Victoria. There is a nice hotel with the same name and you can ask the driver to drop you off at the hotel which is right on that beach.

You can always take the bus to Marbella. Marbella is too far for a day trip in my opinion.

Both beaches were busy in Agust and Sept. Spanish I came across they all recommended Cadiz beaches over Marbella and indeed you could see more natives in Cadiz.

The beaches in Cadiz are on the Atlantic side. They are sandy and shallow quite a ways and warm. The Mediterrenean side beaches such as Marbella have pebbles and get deep quite fast and were real cold in Sept.

Also, beaches are public in Spain. You only pay if you want to rent a beach chair. Using your own beach mat or towel instead of renting a chair is very common though.

It's quite easy to get the Andalucia Express train from Seville to Cadiz - I think the journey takes between 1 hour 45 minutes and two hours. There were lots of tourists doing a day trip to the sea when we travelled. The journey cost about €9 each way. The trains run every hour or so.

In Cadiz, Playa Victoria is nice - about a 15 minute walk from the station. Don't go to the city beach - it's a bit grubby. Playa Victoria has a blue flag so the water quality and cleanliness of the beach is monitored constantly. There are a few nice beach bars and lots of sunbeds for hire as well.

Personally I wasn't a big fan of Cadiz and wish we spent more time in Seville. However, Seville does get so hot, it's lovely to take a short interlude by the sea.

I agree with ter2000. You want to avoid the city beach. I found it difficult to distinguish where city beach ends and the other one starts. That is why if you get off at Playa Victoria Hotel stop, at least you are sure you are in Playa Victoria. Then as long as you walk in the opposite direction of the Cadiz yellow domed Catherdral(looks beautiful next to the Atlantic, you can be sure you are in Playa Victoria.

I won't set out to walk from the train station. Try to go by city bus. There is a bus from Plaza Espana to Playa Victoria but better to ask after you got to Cadiz.

I forgot to mention, I took the train from Cadiz to Seville 2 weeks ago and it took 1 hour 45 minutes longer than I had mentioned in the previous post. However, the train had many stops and the stops can vary and the trip duration can change depending on what time you leave Seville. I would look into a direct bus as well.
