Day tours to Pompeii from Rome?
Anyone have any recomendations of particular tour companies that go from Rome to Pompeii for day tours? Reasonably priced bus tours would be fine for us....we're not interested in a private limo or anything like that.....any help would be so appreciated!

I don't think Enjoy Rome actually run their own tours. They take bookings for VASTOURS - one of the main tour operators in Rome.
The other main operators are APPIAN, CARRANI and GREENLINE.
[All the above include a coral & cameo factory tour, lunch, and a visit to Sorrento. They don't arrive in Pompei till after lunch, and only allow about 2-2.5 hours to visit].
Enjoy Rome do operate a Rome-Pompei shuttle service (see their website) - but that just provides transport. It does not include a guided tour of Pompei itself.
The fare excludes entrance.
You can, of course, go by public transport if you want more flexibility ...
Hope this helps ...

We just got back from Rome last week and tried to use the shuttle to Pompeii with Enjoy Rome. They advised us that it would not be running again till April. We did buy the train tickets at Termini for the fast Eurostar train to Naples and then the local train to Pompeii.Run trip for two of us cost about 92 Euros. The Eurostar train got us to Naples in about and hour and 45 minutes(interesting scenery and then the coastline from Naples was gorgeous)-changing in Naples train station was fine and the whole thing was very very easy! You have the option when you buy your tickets at Pompeii to purchase an audiophone guide in your language(4.50 Euros for one or 6 Euros for two)or there are many teacher types standing around the entrance to give you a personal tour.I had been to Pompeii about 27 years ago so I did not get a guide for my daughter and I. Just make sure that you get the map when you buy the audiophones as it is needed. We allotted about 4 hours there and you seriously could spend way more time.I think that if you hit the "high spots" that they recommend and then wander on your own you get a real feel for the place. I cannot even imagine being there in the summer though-it was close to 60F when we were there and I was walking around with my coat off.The only trouble with all these tour trips is you are kinda stuck with their stopping at these "cut wood places" and the coral/cameo places with a lunch and that really cuts down your time at the site. Have fun and if you need any other info on Rome or the day trips-please write back. We also went out to Ostia Antica(20 minutes by metro and train) on the coast but did not think that it compares to Pompeii.

dutyfree: thanx so much for the tip about the train to Naples. It seems like a great way to see some beautiful scenery as well. My question is once you arrived in Naples on the Eurostar from Rome, did you buy separate tickets on another train line to get directly to Pompeii? If so, what train line did you use, and approx how long did it take and cost? And since neither my husband or I have been to Pompeii before and we want to get the MOST out of it, would you recommend the audio tour with map or to get a personal guide at the entrance? We really would like to ramble and find our own way, but not if we end up missing interesting facts......Thanx again for your help!

Getting to Pompeii is easy from Rome. You can take the train and switch in Naples to the Circumvesuviana line which drops you exactly in front of Pompeii. Once you are inside, the information they give you will let you choose between taking a self guided walking tour for about 2 hours or 4 hours or more depending on your time.

mkmsgolf - I don't think you will really have a problem. You should get to Napoli Centrale(also known as P. Garibaldi) before you get to Campi Fleg which I think would involve a change at the central station anyway. You just probably paid a little extra for the longer ticket.
Get off at Centrale and go downstairs in the station to the lower level and catch the local commuter train Circumvesuviana. Get off at Pompeii Scavi stop. The entrance to the ruins is across the road from the Scavi train station.
