Hi Marie,
There are so many beautiful towns and cities to visit near Madrid. Toledo is a must. Avila and Segovia very interesting. I enjoyed El Escorial (monastery/fortress/ royal residence) and the Valley of the Fallen – remnant from Franco’s regime.
I would start by looking at Viator offerings in Madrid. Even if you decide not to take an organized tour, their destinations will give you some good ideas.
Enjoy Spain – it’s a beautiful country and they need the tourists too.

"Valley of the Fallen – remnant from Franco’s regime."
I is has not been open to the public for several years.
If you ask at the tourist office they can point you to the way of guided day trips.

Most travellers here will make the same trips using public transport without guides.

You can also download a copy of Maribel's Sightseeing Guide to Madrid, which gives you a list of day-trips, with and without taking a guided tour (www.maribelsguides.com).
As ribeirasacra mentions, the tourist office in Madrid has tour information available.

With the new Ave train routes you have Cuenca and then even Valencia ( a mere 1 hour 38 minutes away) for a nice overnight. Or you could do both, overnighting in each one.
I enjoy Alcalá de Henares for a day trip once you have seen the more impressive towns mentioned.
Aranjuez is quite nice, too.

Spanish Sabores,
Thanks so much for your link about your visit to The Valley of the Fallen.
You describe the edifice and the mix of emotions one gets from visiting the site very well. It is truly “monumental” yet disturbing because of the circumstances under which it was constructed.
For those interested in knowing more about that torturous period, I would suggest reading GHOSTS OF SPAIN: Travels Through Spain and Its Silent Past by Giles Tremlett.
The history of Spain is laced with tragedies, not the least of which is their current economic crisis, but that is another story.

Madrid is the flamenco capital of the world. Even if the art form comes from the south (Andalucía), everyone - both singers, guitarists and dancers - has to conquer Madrid to get to the top.
From now on through June, it's high season for flamenco in Madrid, and you can see some of the world's greatest artists on various scenes throughout the city, from small club scenes (tablaos) to grand theaters. Most performances will include both song, dance and guitar.
I've been completely "lost in flamenco" for the past decade, and here are my recommendations for the coming two weeks:
From today until Thursday, plain fantastic Olga Pericet dances with David Coria in Corral de la Morería, just beside the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. She's among the three-four hottest bailaoras (female flamenco dancers) right now, and he (David Coria) has worked extensively with perhaps the greatest of them all, Rocío Molina. Also great artists on song and guitar. Here's Olga Pericet in the new documentary "Flamenco from the Roots": http://vimeo.com/30444448
Sunday June 3rd and Monday 4th fabulous Bélen López dances in the same flamenco club/restaurant (Corral de la Morería). Here in a previous performance in Madrid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hbhkIWSX-Q
About world famous Corral de la Morería: http://www.corraldelamoreria.com/en/history.html
Madrid's largest flamenco festival, Suma Flamenca, goes on from June 7-30.
On June 7-9, Marco Flores dances in Tablao Las Carboneras just off Plaza Mayor. He made his definitve breakthrough in the Jerez festival three months ago when the audience went wild: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-FVsvGBsR4
The world's most famous female flamenco singer on the current scene, Estrella Morente, performs in intimate Casa Patas (just off central Plaza Santa Ana) June 7th from 00:30: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy_Icsd58rw
About dead serious Casa Patas: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...vo-Madrid.html
On June 8 Tomatito performs in the new and modern Teatros del Canal. Tomatito used to perform with the greatest flamenco icon of all times Camarón de la Isla who died in 1992 at 41. Tomatito in action recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2mDE...eature=related
On June 9, legendary singer Carmen Linares perform in the same theater. Here in the Jerez festival a couple of months ago with wonderful dancer Belén Maya, maybe she turns up?
