Day roadtrips from Munich base
We may be buying a BMW and taking European delivery--so we find ourselves in Bavaria where I have NEVER been and my husband hasn't been in 40 or 50 years. The idea is find a self-catering place in Munich where parking the car isn't too much a problem and stay there for 2 weeks. We'd like to take 5-7 day trips down roads that are fun driving (after all, we will have the ultimate driving machine) and where the scenery is beautiful. We can stop in villages and perhaps make it to some of the more important towns.
Oh, we'll be travelling in April probably, possibly very early May, if that makes a difference.
If Google maps identifies drive time from Munich to destination as 1 1/2 hours that's terrific and allows for detours and stops. Up to two hours or so distance is probably manageable for day trips. (We are an older couple so we don't want to get too wild and I'll be doing the lion's share of the driving.) We'd rather stay off the autobahn unless we are headed home and done with the day's explorations.
So what are your favorite villages, monasteries/churches, museums, gardens and scenic views within about two hours of Munich? Are there great restaurants or should we pack a picnic?

Do you plan on seeing Ludwig's castles? Neuschwanstein isn't far, then going the other way Herrenchiemsee Palace on the way to Salzburg.
There is so much to do in that area, you can go down into Austria but don't forget to get a vignette.
Why stay all of your time in Munich? There are so many beautiful places where you can wake up and enjoy the views.

Murnau is a great stop for dinner. We love Griesbrau. They make their own beer there and have a buffet but it is really good. Best Goulash ever. Take the drive from Ettal to Oberammergau. Going from Ettal to Murnau you will go into some tunnels. They look round until you enter then they become square walls and you can see hooks and wires used to build airplanes. Hitler hid then from view that way. Oberammergau is home to the NATO school and was an SS base. All the beautiful brick roads were built by slave labor so I always reflect on those poor souls. It is also home to the Passion play and has the most beautiful murals painted on the buildings. You will love the BMW tour.

And excuse me, what is a "vignette"? I mean other than what the dictionary says...
And we are staying in Munich for the time because we are, as they say, old. We have found that we don't have near as much stamina as we used to (ages 63 and 81 when we depart in the spring). We love becoming part of a neighborhood. We love cooking with local ingredients. I am an art historian so going through any cultural or art org is a slow, slow process. It looks like day trips abound and that will take us out of Munich into villages and mountains. But we also hate packing, checking in and out, and unpacking and packing again. You are quite right--we will miss things because of this process. We regard that as a reasonable trade-off for assurances of a more relaxed and profound experience!

flpab, those are JUST the suggestions we hope to get. Murnau is also the place where the modern painter Kandinsky so much time while living and studying in Munich, so that sound exciting. And goulash? My husband is SUCH a goulash fan!
We have not settled on a self-catering place yet. Do you have one you recommend? We have to figure out the time frame of ordering the car and figuring out when delivery will be. What we want is a place with easy access to Underground or Staatsbahn so getting around Munich will be easy. I like a place in a residential neighborhood where there are plenty of small shops, too--although I know there are marvelous central markets in Munich and of course we want to check those out.
Our first self-catering experience was about 10 years ago in a gite in Honfleur, France. We are now hooked--it is just the right situation for us.
