Day drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein & Linderhof
Hey,
We have hired a car for a day for when we are in Munich to go and see Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. We will be doing this on December 1st.
Is anyone able to suggest any routes or stops that would be worth checking out throughout? We chose to drive rather than take a tour for that extra bit of freedom and to follow more of our own pace so want to make the most of that and check out a few places along the way.
From what I've read it would be good to get Neuschwanstein done first and earlier to beat the tour groups, however I'm not sure it will really get as busy being December? I could be wrong. Then head over to Linderhof and back to Munich. If this trip is better done in reverse please also let me know
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

When I drove this 20+ years ago we did Linderhof first then Neuschwanstein, IIRC. Last summer we did an organized tour from Munich and the itinerary was Oberammergau, Linderhof, Neuschwanstein then return to Munich. It as a full day.

Ettal, Oberammergau, Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, long day so get an early start.
If it is snowing allow more time, the roads are kept clear but the road from Ettal to Oberammergau is curvy. Beautiful ride though and right after Ettal there are some great wood carvers that have their stores right at their homes. Best deals and I love their kitchen items for gifts. You will see their items in front of their homes. Wish you could spend the night in the area and not be so rushed.

We drove to Neuschwanstein from Garmisch in September. I tried to get tickets in advance, but did not have any luck ordering on line. We were there when they opened and could not get into the castle until 12:40. By the time we were done, we drove around the area and went to Linderhof the next day first thing in the morning and then did Oberammergau and Ettal. Stay in the area and make a two day trip and enjoy. Trying to do everything in one day you will not get to enjoy the area.

Hi asha,
As noted, that is a very long day and you might not be able to get the timing right.
If you can't do both palaces, I recommend Linderhoff.
Have you considered stopping at http://www.wieskirche.de/eframset.htm ?
Have a nice visit.

Only my opinion as we have visited Linderhof in December and another time in September. Part of the beauty in visiting Linderhof include the grounds, fountains and statues which you will not be able to enjoy in December. If it's convenient after your visit to Neuschwanstein then by all means, stop for a visit but the days will be short in December and if the weather is bad it may not be worth it.
Enjoy your travels.
Enjoy your travels.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your replies.
We have booked the car to be picked up at 7am so hopefully this would get us in with a nice head start.
I hadn't though to check out tour times so will get that done to ensure we can arrive for the English tours. Thanks for that.
I have visited both in one day but was only ~12 years old so can't recall if it felt rushed however we have very limited time in Munich this time aorund and are really only going to see the castle/palace so an option to make 2 days out of it isn't possibly unfortunately.
If closer to the date weather seems not to be on our side I imagine Neuschwanstein will get priority as my travel buddy has wanted to see this castle for a while, she wasn't aware of Linderhof however I slightly recall it being a nice stop. This was April though so as you mentioned about the grounds/fountains what I remember to what we will get would be different. Hopefully not so different it isn't a memorable sight.
Is there generally snow in the first week of December? I assumed it would start later in the month besides tops of mountains.
Thankyou for all your replies, much appreciated!
