It's the Dartford crossing bridge, not tunnel. And about time they do something, there's always a traffic jam for that bridge.

"It's the Dartford crossing bridge, not tunnel"

The new Dart charge, like the tollbooth/tag system it replaces, applies both to northbound journeys (generally through the tunnels) and to southbound (generally across the bridge)

Like the London congestion charge (and the charges on the Dublin beltway), hired cars failing to pay will be automatically debited and fined via the hire company, which will then charge the costs on to the hirer through the credit card used. Foreign cars failing to pay will be debited and fined, and European debt collectors will (at least within the EU) simply call on the car's address with a writ for the debt and their fee.

Drivers have till the end of the following day to pay - mostly by phone or online.

Thanks for that information. All I have to do now is remember to register before we are likely to use the crossings, or remember to pay afterwards!

Legallly, only a defined set of traffic-related fines are covered by a EU Directive 2011/82/EU which forces Member States to assist eachother in collecting those fines. Toll fines are not part of that catalogue, so the Dutch authorities will not forward your address to any government or non-government agency trying to collect UK road toll fines in the Netherlands. In fact, they won't even do it for offences covered by the Directive as the UK, ROI and Denmark had chosen to "opt-out" of transposing it into national law.
In reality, you should then not take the same car back to UK again. Or pay the fine.

I drive in the UK regularly. I've never had a fine send home. That could be because I never break any traffic rules and always stick to the speed limit, but more likely it's that they do not send out tickets to other countries.

But thanks for posting this, I'll make sure to pay the Dartford charge next time I'm there. Hopefully without traffic jams this time.

There is a similar system In Portugal . It covers a lot of their highways. Now they are looking to to fine drivers who do not pay the tolls. It seems that information is shared somehow.

If it works as well as the similar system on the Golden Gate Bridge there should be fewer queues. One can only hope.

I will pay the toll. I would pay a traffic fine if they sent me one. I have never had one from a country other than the Netherlands, and then they are normally when DH is driving.
