Remember the big bruhaha (sp?) over this book and whether or not someone was using this forum to promote sales? Well, it seems that because of or in spite of the posts here, the self published book sold 30,000 copies and has been picked up by a real publisher. It is listed as one of a handful of travel books in today's New York Times book section that might make good reading for travel happy folks on your christmas list. So whether you were annoyed by or contributed to the hype here about the book, it appears to have made good.

any NYer knows that once it's mentioned in the NYT it is over - done - old news.

And despite what Carta says... in this case, its being "mentioned in the NYT" might be more like the start of the story, rather than old news.
And for what it's worth, on the same page (the next book down, and the last mentioned in this article is what sounds like a must-read for cmt and the Basilicata-loving crowd here).

The NYT article starts with "THE BEST AMERICAN TRAVEL WRITING 2004 (Houghton Mifflin, cloth, $27.50; paper, $14), edited this year by Pico Iyer." I just finished that one. Actually I only read about half of the essays. There is very little about Europe in it. You would never consider some of the places as travel destinations, and if the temptation would ever arise you will be sure to avoid them after reading this book.
Dario is really pushing the book. He and his publicist are looking for venues for him to promote the book in the states. I found it very funny.
Pushing a book on talk shows and in any other venue is par for the course these days.
Carta, when you ever GET "mentioned" in the NYT I am sure THAT will porbably be very old news.
