Danube wineries in March
Has anyone visited between Melk and Krems in late March? We want to take the drive from Vienna and stay overnight but we are concerned whether the wineries will be open at this time of year and if the scenery will be worth the drive. We intend to visit the concentration camp early in the day and then stop and go along the valley. I don't think the boat ride would be a good idea as the weather should be quite cool.

While March is not the best time to visit this area, it is still a very nice trip and should not be missed.
Driving and an overnight is perhaps the best way to see the " Wachau" as the wine region between Krems and Melk is known.
I would suggest visiting Malthausen first and then taking the highway along the left ( north) bank of the Danube back to reach this area.
Several towns offer accomodations, wine, history and good food.

Most restaurants are closed Mondays and or Tuesdays so a visit on other days is best.
Nice restaurant on the Donau in Weissenkirchen is Heinzle ( www. heinzle.at) Good food moderate price and a good wine list.
Jamek ( restaurant and winery)in Joching is also excelent.
I usually agree with a poster from another question but think that the Prandauerhof, while good is not worth the price. Also they have just two rooms there for overnight guests and equal accomomdations can be found at much lower costs.
I personally enjoy the wines of Jamek ( in Joching by Weissenkirchen and Prager in Wissenkirchen.
Jamek can be purchased at the restaurant. Prager , almost across the road from Restaurant Heinzle may not be open during these days.
But adjacent to the ferry landing in Weissenkirchen is a town Vinothek that offers numerous wines of the area for sale. This is a good, quick way to receive an education on wines from here as they gladly offer samples.
Due to the soils and location almost all wines of this area are whites.
Plase look at the Weissenkirchen web-site carefully, numerous vintners have guest houses. They will offer over night accomodations, a wine test and tour plus breakfast at an excelent price Perhaps not 5 star hotel but a fantastic and unique experience.
Vintage 2003 is perhaps one of the best ever. The summer was very hot and extra dry producing a frity perfect wine to some. 2002 was also very good. Do not juge the wine by price, ask to sample and buy what you enjoy.
The people of the Wachau have grown wine for so long that some are rumored to have alcohol pumped by their heart and very much like to talk about their product.

in towns is 60 KM. You will see the posters. Observe it! The police have little else to do in the winter than to give tourists tickets!

Molker: thank you so much for the information. My husband knows more about wine than I. I simply drink what I like. We enjoy small guest houses and if a vitner in the area provides accomodations we will surely take advantage of it. Thanks also for the driving tip, my husband tends to have a lead foot, especially in Europe.
