Danube Cruise Vienna to Salzburg
Dear Fodorites:
Thanks for your advice on
lodging in Vienna.
My wife and I are arriving in
Vienna by air early on Saturday, September 13 and have three days free before I am expected to appear at a conference in Vienna on the afternoon of the 16th. We are planning to make a side trip to Salzburg during those days. Might we find a good cruise up the Danube
all the way to Salzburg?
Advice welome.

Salzburg is not on the Danube. It's on the Salzach which is a tributary of the Inn which joins the Danube at Passau. Neither the Salzach nor the Inn is navigable, though some short stretches can be used by small boats.

I think it's hard to do a 7 day cruise when you only have 3 days.
You can either take the train to Salzburg and stay for a couple of days or take a daytime boat trip from Vienna to Durnstein and Krems and return to Vienna by train. You can do a search here on Fodor's for Durnstein or Krems. You might also want to visit the Melk Abbey.

If you are looking for a day trip on the Danube, Bratislava makes a nice excursion from Vienna. We took a high speed catamaran, so I wouldn't call it a "cruise" in the traditional sense, but it made a very nice side trip from Vienna. Bratislava is a very pretty old city, and you can pretty much walk everywhere you want to go in a day.
Salzburg is also a lovely city that you will enjoy. If you choose to go there, take the train and spend at least one night there (more if you can).

Although the Danube does not flow through Salzburg, a friend of mine took a Danube cruise that included a stop with a bus excursion to Salzburg.
Unfortunately, the cruise he took was about 7 days, which is far longer than you have.
If you want to see Salzburg, I suggest taking the train. The trip is less than 3 hours on the faster trains. You can leave at 7:40 and be in Salzburg at 10:27.
If you want to get a really early start, the 6:14 departure gets you there at 8:53.
All departures are from Wien Westbahnhof - the west station.
With such short time in Vienna, I think you can find plenty to keep you busy for your 3 days without going anywhere else.
