Prague public transportation
For the metro or tram, orient yourself toward the final stop of the line. You can buy tickets at tobacco stores. Tickets are good on the metro, buses, and trams. The metro shuts down at midnight but trams 50-59 and buses 500 and above run all night. Night trams have an unsavory reputation.
On the ticket-buying machines in the metro, the green buttons are for full adult fares, the red buttons are for children. Transfer Tickets for P and O (central Prague) can be used within 60 minutes on weekdays from 8am to 5pm. After 5pm, and on weekends, the tickets are good for 90 minutes. Non-transfer tickets are good on buses for 15 minute rides, or on the metro for a distance equal to 4 stops from the first validating station, it allows changes among the lines, but for a trip no longer than 30 minutes altogether.
On the machines, “Storno” means “Cancel.”
When entering a bus, tram, or metro, you must validate your ticket by inserting your pass or ticket into the yellow machine, which stamps a date and time. Do this only once for each pass or ticket. These machines are usually before you enter the escalator or stairs. In the bus or tram, the validation machine is near the front. Insert your ticket face up, with the white space toward the machine. Make sure the machine has left a stamp, otherwise try another machine.
Trams - the network of tram routes throughout the city provide a fast, frequent and above all fun way to get around. A full service on all tram routes operates between 4.30am and midnight, with eight night routes (nos. 51-58) covering the city's most populated areas from 12am-4.30am (all with a central transfer point at Lazarská. Trams can be entered from the front or the rear of the vehicle; just stamp your ticket when you get inside.
Buses - operating hours for bus routes mirror those of trams. After midnight, twelve night buses (nos. 501-512) run on routes not covered by Prague's trams (although interchange points between the two are bus stops near Muzeum and I.P. Pavlova).
Useful connections: Metro line A Staromestska (Old Town) and Mala Strana Square ( Little Quarter), connect with Tram #22 for transport to and from Prague Castle Tram 22 is a wonderful sightseeing line, but beware of pickpockets.
Metro - Prague has three metro lines (running from 5am to midnight), A, B and C Most metro stations have escalators. Transfers from one line to another are possible at Muzeum (A and C) , Mustek (A and B), and Florenc (B and C).
Line A (Green) runs between Dejvická and Skalka.
Line B (Yellow) runs between Èerný Most and Zlièín.
Line C (Red) runs between Nádraží Holešovice and Háje.
Trains run at two minute intervals during rush hours, with intervals of between five and ten minutes during off peak periods.
For further details on routes and timetables, visit the city's transport department (Dopravní podnik or DP for short) website at: www.dp-praha.cz
Metro Tickets and Fares - if you intend to use Prague's public transport system, ensure that you have a properly validated ticket for the duration of your journey.
Single/return tickets for trams and bus journeys can be bought at metro stations, PIS offices, hotels and shops, while the Prague (Matilda) Card is a three-day option offering unlimited travel on the DP system as well as entry to state-run museums and galleries.
There are also passes for various numbers of transportation-only days.
Funicular for Petrin Hill starts at the Ujezd tram stop (on lines #22, 12, 23) in Mala Strana every 10-15 minutes. Use the transit ticket that allows transfers, you can use it on the funicular. You can also follow the path to the half-way point and pick up the funicular there
Trains and buses: for a combined database of bus and train schedules, go to www.vlak-bus.cz , be sure to use the Czech spelling for the cities and towns. A train-only data base is at www.vlak.cz , buses only is at www.bus.cz , for international trains, go to www.eurolines.cz
For international trains you can also use http://bahn.hafas.de or www eurail.com
Inter-city or international train tickets: Advice from fodors forum: “I think the most helpful advice you gave us was to check with Cedok Travel Agency in Prague. It was without doubt the easiest and simplest way we obtained train tickets on any of our travels.” Phone: (420) 2 24197111
Fax: (420)2 2321656

Taxis: Those taxis that don’t have these names, and are cruising or parked and waiting may rip you off. Make sure the meter is cleared when you get in. AAA Taxi (Tel: 222 333 222) and Halotaxi (Tel: 2 44 11 44 11) If you need to hail a cab on the street, use only registered taxis that display a company license number and a taxi roof lamp. When you get in, make sure that the taxi's meter is turned on.
Navigation: Ulice or Ul=street, Namesti or nam = square, trida = avenue, Most or Mostu =bridge. Just the capital letter “U” before a name means “At, or, At the House of…”, similar to the French ‘Chez’
or Italian "Da...".

websites of prominent sights
Bethlehem Chapel in Old Town: The original was where early church reformer and martyr Jan Hus preached and where the church service was first offered in the Czech language. In a city of Baroque splendor, the interior of Bethlehem Chapel is a masterpiece of simplicity. http://www.prague-info.cz/en/prague/...thlehem_chapel
Church of Our Lady Before Tyn
The Tyn church is quite a landmark in Old Town Square, but every time we tried to go inside we have found that it is closed to visitors. I believe it opens 30 minutes before the services—the service schedule can be found at http://tynska.farnost.cz/historie_tyn_en.html Good photo: http://picturesfromprague.com/stare-...ur-lady-of-tyn
Church of St Nicholas . There are two in Prague. One is at Old Town Square, very nice, but the one not to miss is in the Little Quarter on the main street going up the hill to the Castle. Baroque magnificence , in a city full of Baroque splendors. Chram Svateho Mikulase (on Malsostranske namesti),. If you’re walking to the Castle, you can’t help but walk right by it in its own little square. A good place to bring binoculars so you can see the details. May be closed Monday, limited hours on other days. There are concerts. http://www.psalterium.cz
Church of Mary Victorious. This is in the southern part of the Lesser Quarter, and it’s the home of the venerated Infant Jesus of Prague, a wax figurine from the 1600s for whom outfits are made and changed regularly. Open for visits during the day, except when services are going on. http://www.karmel.at/prag-jesu/
Jewish Museum in Prague www.jewishmuseum.cz is the name of the organization managing all the Jewish landmarks in Josefov. It provides guided package tours with an English-speaking guide as part of a comprehensive admission price.
The Loreto: In Lesser Quarter, an important place of pilgrimage since its construction in 1626. The Santa Casa is a copy of what is said to be the original house where the angel Gabriel told Mary about the future birth of Jesus (The Annunciation). http://www.loreta.cz
The absolute best sightseeing activity we did on my second visit to Prague, was to take the guided tour of Municipal House, Obecni Dum. This building has 650 rooms, the one-hour tour includes perhaps 10 of them, and these vary. The building interior is a treasure of Art Nouveau decoration and gorgeous detail, the pattern on the curtains in each room matches the patterns on even the radiator grilles. One room was decorated by Czech artist Alfons Mucha, and I’ll never forget it. These tours are limited in size and in English are offered on an infrequent basis and must be reserved in advance. www.obecnidum.cz
