Trip Report Cycling a week in Holland on a rented bike

Jump to last reply

From Schiphol airport there is a short and frequent train service into Amsterdam main station and it was from there that I rented from MacBikes a clunky red bike with fat wheels for my five days of cycling in Holland North. I should have tried harder to rent a proper touring bike with hybrid tyres, but apparently they are difficult to find in high season.
I cycled directly out to Haarlem a beautiful medieval city to sleep in a hostel chain called StayOK which I would not recommend. With advice from the hostel literature the next day I rode through a dunes national park nearby, but once there the strong winds and steep inclines showed up the inadequacies of my town bike. I also started to worry about a puncture in this sparse landscape as no repair kit had been provided by the renter.
