Currency for Germany and Czech

Hi,

I will be travelling to Germany and the Czech Republic for 3 weeks this summer. I know I need to get Euros for Germany and Czech Crowns for the trip. I will buy some currency before I go to bring on the trip. However, how much would you recommend that I bring of each currency? I don't want to bring a large amount, in case it is stolen or lost, but do want to bring enough so I don't have to go to an ATM for a few days. Suggestions? Also, what about the denominations? In some places, it is better to have small bills (for a variety of reasons), and in others, it is not necessary. Would appreciate some advice!

Thanks.

You shouldn;t need much cash. Pay for all you can - hotels, restaurats, shops etc - with credit cars. Pull walking around money from an ATM every 2 or 3 days. No need to carry a lot of cash at all.

I wouldn't bring any, I'd get them there from an ATM. If you really want some in advance, I would hope you are going to Germany first and then just get euro.

Whatever you do, do not get koruna in advance in the US if you aren't going there first. I wouldn't anyway, as I said, but that would really not make any sense as you could more easily get it in Germany, probably. It's not that common a currency so harder to get in the US.

But if you must take euro with you to last a few days for some reason I don't understand (why to last a few days? why not just in case of an emergency like no ATM working at the airport or something--then I'd say 50-100 euro), you'll have to figure out what you think you want to spend it on and your habits in terms of how much you spend on those kind of things, like meals or whatever. Since you can use CCs, I guess I'd still say around 100 euro. Get 10 or 20 notes (euro).

I'm not going to read your link, I've been to both of these countries.

You want us to read your identical post on Frommer's site? Not quite sure why.

But in any case -- the easiest/cheapest is to use your ATM card at your arrival airport in Germany. But if you just feel you must have some € on hand -- wait until you are at your departure airport. You will have time to kill and you can buy a few € from the Bureau de Change there.

Use your ATM card once you get to Czech- definitely don't but koruna in advance.

Why do you not want to go to an ATM for a few days? They are everywhere and might eat up 3 minutes of your time.

Small bills, 20€ are always preferred. 50€ isn't a problem either. An ATM will give you 10, 20 or 50€.

2000 Crowns which are common from Czech ATMs can already be a small problem.
