Culture on a Santorini Farm!

We are spending 12 days on the island of Santorini September 2013. Is there anything on the island or closer islands that we could spend a day on a farm or with local people to cook or help out on their farm? Really want to experience the culture and food! We are foodies! If not on Santorini, a neighboring island for a day trip. We found a place on Crete but can not get there for a day trip due to the ferry schedules.... Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

I can't help but I'm curious to see the responses to your post. Having spent 4 nights on santorini, 12 days seems like a very long time.

That's why Im hoping to do day trips to other islands! We wanted to have a home base and go from there. I just have no idea what islands to go to...for the day... we have a private boat driver who will be bringing us around the Caldera and perhaps he can help us with some advice to other islands for day trips. I am hoping for advice from Fodors!

Not sure the ferries from santorini are timed well to do day trips...why not split the time between two islands?

If you're there in September perhaps you can participate in the grape harvest. Ask at the wineries. Ask your hotel's concierge. Ask in any restaurant that sells local 'barrel' wine.

"...on Santorini we are stuck for 12 days." And this is a problem? You're on holiday, just chill. You don't have to do anything except switch your cell phone off. I would hire a car while you're there and tour the island. The longer you rent it the cheaper the rate.

We did a private tour with a "Captain" on Santorini. He took us out to the caldera and sulphur springs, with a surprise visit to his grandfather's vineyard. We had a wonderful time. I have a feeling this kind of thing would not be that hard to arrange if you ask at your hotel, or wait for more responses here.

You might benefit from framing the issue differently. You have concluded that 12 days booked in Santorini = trips have to doable as day trips. Is this a correct assumption? What is that keeps you from staying in another island overnight? If cost, have you actually computed what you can do at what cost? In comparison to what you can do as day trips? For example, there are many accommodation in Naxos in September for less than 40EU a night. Some even goes down to 22EU. Just look, for example, at www.booking.com.

We really want to spend time at the two resorts we booked... Perivolas and Katikies. But would like to arrange about 3 day trips to other islands for our 12 day stay on Santorini. Trying to keep it simple but explore a little and see the culture of the islands..

I wonder what kind of farm you'll find. The soil is very, very arid. I was amazed that grape vines could stay alive and they weren't on trellises, laying on the ground.
Santorini is not the right island for day trips, too far away from the other islands. Perhaps you could go to Crete which is a wonderful and much larger island.
I assume you paid in full on a non-refundable rate on Santorini resorts? Isn't there any way you can cancel part of your time there?

You really need to give up the idea of using Santorini as a base for day trips to other islands — distances are just too great, and the few hours you would have on an island wouldn't be enough to organise farm visits, etc. Check the ferry schedules when you get to Santorini. It will be possible to get to and from Ios, for example (only an hour by catamaran) in one day, but I'm not sure what you would do when you get there.

Visits to vineyards on Santorini are a really good idea, especially if you are there during the grape harvest. Every island, no matter how arid, has small subsistence farms for locally grown vegetables, fruits, and melons. Another thing you might look for are cooking classes. Here is what I mean: http://triciaannemitchell.com/2013/0...-class-greece/. Do a google search and you will find several other websites along the same lines.

Actually greg has the best idea, IMO: stay on another island overnight, even though you are still paying for the room on Santorini. That would be more practical than paying for expensive catamaran tickets to get only a few hours on an island. Naxos would be a good island for an overnight stay. This is more common practice than you may think: some people book package holidays for the cheap air fares, but don't even stay in the accommodation included in the package.

I scanned the responses quicky and don't think anyone mentioned Delos. It's an amazing archeological site, not an inhabited island, but imo a wonderful day trip from Santorini.

Hi Cathinjoetown,

Delos is one of my favourite places in the world, but unfortunately you can't see it on a day trip from Santorini. You are probably thinking of Mykonos, where Delos is a 20 minute boat ride away.

It is very interesting that you will stay in two different hotels that both are in Oia.....
The owner of Perivolas has a private boat, why don't you ask if he could arrange a visit to nearby Sikinos?

It is a lovely tiny absolutely not touristy island with a typical Cycladic Chora, it only gets crowded in August, it should be pretty quiet in September.

If you go to Sikinos, i would absolutely follow Heimdall's advice to stay there overnight.

Heimdall,

I was thinking of Mykonos. No wonder no one had suggested Delos!!!

Good idea, though, Cath! I would go to Mykonos just for another opportunity to visit Delos. ;-)
