Croatia to Venice Itinerary

I am flying into Zagreb in mid May, eventually ending up in Venice.I have nine nights to spend before arriving in Venice and am looking for suggestions. My thoughts so far are 2 nights in Zagreb, including datyrip to Plitvice Lakes, then renting car and going to Istria, probably basing myself in Rovinj from which I would do daytrips. I thought maybe 3 nights there, maybe one of the the 3 days in Opatija.. I will then drop off rental car and head toward Trieste {how many days?] Then on to Venice. I am looking for any comments on this itinerary, I think perhaps I could be seeing more in this amount of time, but dont know what. Also how much time in each place? I will appreciate as suggestions, modifcations, additional ideas. Thanks so much.

Is there a reason why you're not including Dubrovnik?

> how much time in each place?

That depends on what you want to see and experience and your preferred pace of travel, so you'll need to tell us more.

I would skip Triest. Instead, head for Dubrovnik and then go by ferry connections to Hvar, Split, Zadar and then the ferry to Venice

I had originaly planned driving down to Split, ferries to Hvar, Korcula etc. then to Dubruvnik and on to Venice. This itinerary became very complicated in May. Ferries do not run every day, among other things. Also I do not want to take overnight ferry to Venice or fly back toward north. The drive south also seemed too long. So for all those reasons I am changing the trip, but need to keep my plane ticket into Zagreb and out of Paris.

So, in hoping to salvage this trip, I am hoping for some suggestions.

We made similar trip last July, we flew into Budapest and out of Venice, we had 14 days on the ground, with 9 of the days in Croatia.

We spent a few days in Budapest and then took the train from Budapest to Zagreb. We immediately flew to Dubrovnik. We stayed a few days in D, picked up a car when leaving, and meandered our way back to Zagreb, stopping in Split, Trogir, Zadar, Plitvice. We returned the car in Zagreb, stayed a day or two, and took the night train to Venice.

I typed up my travelog and would be happy to email it to you. If interested, email me at [email protected].

Have a great trip,
Sandy (in Denton)

Have you considered taking the Venezia ferry from Rovinj (or Porec) to Venice? It's not cheap but fits your itinerary perfectly -- as long as you can depart on one of its sailing days. But those seem almost daily by later May.
