Croatia or Czech?

Where are you from? What do you seek in a holiday?
Both places have complex cultural and political histories.
Croatia has a long coastline and a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and temperate winters, at least along the coast, occasionally enlivened by bitter winter winds called Bura.
Croatia had Romans, Prague had Mozart.
Much of Croatia was ruled by Venice for generations, and food and architecture were heavily influenced by them. The Czech Republic was ruled by Austrians and Hungarians for generations. Ditto with food and architecture.
Both were linked with other ethnic groups/nations by Versailles Conference at the end of WWI, and both lost no time in severing those links when it became possible.
Other than this, I don't think they are very much alike, so you need to refine your wants.

I agree with Ackislander about the diversity between these destinations. Decide what type of trip you're looking for. I prefered Prague since it offered much more traditional sightseeing than Croatia (museums, churches, etc). Croatia was mostly an outdoor/scenery vacation and very relaxing.
If you go to Croatia you need to get to the islands or on the water as that is where much of the beauty is. The bura winds strip the mainland side of the islands so they don't look that great from the coastal road. Dubrovnik and Split are worth a day of sightseeing but not much more as they are very small but very interesting.

There is one large city in the Czech Republic of charm and beauty: Prague.
I visited there for the first time last month and I left pondering two questions: Why did I not go there sooner, and why did I not stay longer.
It is not like I haven't been anywhere! I mean Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Boston, Munich, Vienna, Copenhagen, etc. are not exactly dots on the landscape.
I was captivated by Prague.
BUT that said, I want to go back and take a trip to the smaller cities.
Of the UNESCO Heritage sites, Cesky Krumlov rates high. But it is not alone. If you get the DK guidebook you will see some fabulous pictures. They are not exaggerations; they are for real.
If you like music, Prague shines like a beacon in the night.
It is the one city I left knowing that "I must return." And at the same time I cursed the weak dollar and soaring oil prices.

Bob - have you done a trip report?
Halsa - if you're looking for another city you might consider Vienna or Budapest. Otherwise the countryside in CZ is beautiful. I took only one side trip from Prague to as castle about an hour away so can't comment on other towns but many people go to Cesky Krumlov.

I love the Czech Republic. If you only go to Prague you are missing out! Although I LOVE Prague there are so many parts of the country with so much to do and see.
Cesky Krumlov is amazing but best in the early mornings and nights when it is less crowded. Charming.
Telc is gorgeous as well - a great place to slow down as there really are not sites to see but just enjoy wandering the town. Olomouc is nice, too, but not my favourite. Many people like Karlovy Vary but I have been to many spa towns so would not return there.
Kutna Hora and nearby Sedlec (bone church) are worth seeing as well - give it an overnight.
There are tons of great castles. My favourites are Orlik and Zvihov. Karlstejn is also good, as is Krivoklat but more touristed.
Cesky Raj in the north has interesting rock formations and great walks. It is stunningly beautiful in places.
There are so many places to get off the beaten trail and escape crowds.
It is very easy to drive and navigate in the CR as well. Probably the easiest country (other than Canada and the US) that I have driven in.
But I love Croatia as well. It has lovely and rugged coastline, tiny hilltop villages in Istria, fabulous port towns, white truffles, great food and fascinating culture (not to mention history).
Plitvice Lakes is one of my favourite parts of the country - so spectacular and different. Not to be missed.
Krka is very lovely as well - if you go take your bathing suit!
Rovinj (Istria) is gorgeous and worth an overnight stop. Pula is interesting for the ancient Roman amphitheatre. Trogir is an amazing little town near Split that is also worth an overnight stop. Split warrants a bit of time for Diocletian's Palace. I do not enjoy it as much as Trogir, however.
If you are into snorkeling Croatia has some good spots. The islands are amazing. My favourite would be Mljet - gorgeous, tranquil, treed and stunning. Other favourites include Vis, Elafiti and Cres. I also very much like Hvar and Korcula but find them sort of too resort-y. They are still wonderful, however.

Far different places---hard to compare. Croatia is far more spread out along the coast---here is what it looks like:

Prague is my favorite place in the world. With that said, the exchange rate (if you are from the US) right now really sucks! You will get way more bang for your buck in Croatia, so it might actually make sense to go there, if you think you might have a chance to see Prague at another time.
If $ is not a big factor, then decide on your main interests. You will get some great seafood & a beautiful coastal view in Croatia. You will be able to "chill" there, if you want, and probably spend less money than if you were to go to other coastal regions, in other countries.
In Prague, you can see concerts, amazing architecture, and absorb city life. Personally, I like the pace of Prague. Not too fast for me (it is only like 1 million people, so it's not like NY, or anything close to that!) There is also quite a bit to do outside the city, as far as seeing nature, etc, if that interests you.
Post back with thoughts about your interests, and maybe we can help you some more.

croatia gets my vote
did czech republic and croatia in one trip so can compare
croatia has the inland, the lakes , the beaches and the islands
feels like you get several holidays in one go
cheaper
