Croatia and Montenegro Itinerary

We are looking at traveling from SFO to Croatia / Montenegro; tentatively leaving on June 22 and returning on July 1. Two women in 50s who have never traveled in these areas. Friend's family history is in Podgorica, Montenegro which she would like to visit. We are trying to come up with an itinerary for this trip. Looking at possibly visiting Dubrovnik, Kotor along with Podgorica and ????. We like experiencing different cultures, food, wine, sightseeing and light outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking.

Other than what we listed, should we visit/stay other areas? What would be good airports to fly in and out of to maximize our time? Any recommendations on how to get from one area to the next - train or bus?

Any help would be appreciated since we need to book flights as soon as possible.

Round trip Dubrovnik is probably your best bet, though I would check the Montenegro airports--you never know when a deal may pop up. Train is nonexistent, but bus will get you between those places if you do not wish to drive.
If flying in and out of Dbv, I would immediately depart to the south (depends on arrival time of course, but small town of Herceg Novi is not far from the airport). Then Kotor Bay, Podgorica, and then back up to Dubrovnik. I think those places, plus any close-by places that interest you, would be plenty for a 9-day trip.

I generally agree with yorkshire – and think you should be able to have a wonderful trip to this amazing part of the world!

My one comment is about moving on from your arrival airport, and I suspect it’s more of a clarification than anything else: If there is any chance that you will have jet lag, I would strongly encourage you to take public transportation for your first night or two. Although most people are not aware of it, there is mounting evidence that driving with jet lag is just as dangerous -- to yourself and others -- as driving drunk, and nothing you can do will prevent the microsleeps (which you might not even notice) that are the apparent culprit.

If you decide that Montenegro doesn’t have enough of interest to fill your time (and I’m not saying it wouldn’t!), then a day and night in Korcula, reached by ferry from Dubrovnik, might be worth considering. And you have other options, too – you might consult the Rough Guide if you want to consider other locations near Dubrovnik.

Enjoy!
