Croatia & Amalfi coast

Hello,
My fiance and I are trying to plan our honeymoon trip for next summer, last week of july and first week of august. We heard that we should book in advance because hotels get booked up quickly. We have about 12nights 13 days and would love to travel to the Amalfi coast and the west coast of Croatia.
We were thinking of flying from London to Split, spend one day there and go to Hvar for one night and then take a ferry to Dubrovnik and spend 2-3nights there. We were also thinking whether it is best to take the overnight ferry to Bari or fly to rome. Then visit Positano for 3 days and Pompeii for one day and head back to rome to catch a flight back home. My question is has anyone done this trip before and do you think we have enough time to go to all those places in 13 days, if not what would you take out. Also any recommendations on must see places and transportation would be great! We would like to relax but would also like to see as much as possible. Thank you

I would not try to do both--I would just not like all that moving around on a 12 day trip. However, the only way for you to decide if you would like it is to map out each day and all of the transport options. Hvar for only one day seems counter to your wish for relaxation. In July and August, Hvar and Dubrovnik will be quite crowded.

One of my favorite trips was a combo Croatia and the Amalfi Coast but we had almost 3 weeks. I would try to either get more days or else choose one or the other. But if you are, really look into flying from Dubrovnik to Rome or better yet, to Naples. Taking the ferry and then making your way over to the AC will take a lot longer than you think.

Here's my trip report for that trip, might be useful

"We would like to relax but would also like to see as much as possible." You can't do both. It's your honeymoon - try to slow down and relax. If you have 12 nights, you have 11 days (only in tour company brochures does 12 nights equal 13 days). With 11 days, I'd choose not more than 3 destinations. You have way too many destinations on your wish list right now. Don't forget that each time you change locations will use up at least half a day, and the kinds of location changes you are talking about will waste a whole day. Better to choose destinations closer to each other.

I agree with the previous posters -- one or the other, not both.

Congrats, best wishes, and happy honeymoon!

This is easily doable as long as you make some minor adjustments.

First, fly into Dubrovnik and out of Naples. Second, forget about Split and Hvar. I love Hvar but it is too difficult to reach for the time you have. This would be the itinerary I recommend having been to these places multiple times and traveled these routes.

Fly into Dubrovnik – 4 nights in Dubrovnik (many things to do and see in and around Dubrovnik to keep you busy)

Take the bus to Korcula Town– 2 nights in Korcula Town (to include the cross island bus to Vela Luka which affords you great views of the entire island)

Take the evening ferry from Korcula to Dubrovnik which links up with the 22:00 overnight ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari – 1 night on the ferry (by spending a night on the ferry you save daytime travel hours.

Arrive in Bari at 08:00, freshen up and get yourself a good meal then take the 13:14 Frecciargento high speed train to Naples arriving at 16:53. Transfer to the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento which should get you there around 18:30…plenty of time to check-in and freshen up for dinner.

Amalfi Coast and all it has to offer – 5 nights

Fly home from Naples

You can take one night off of Dubrovnik and add it to the Amalfi Coast is you wish.

Some things to consider. When ferries are a key part of your travels you need to plan your itinerary around them. They are not as frequent as planes or buses. Buying ferry tickets for Jadrolinija used to be a challenge because you could not buy them in the US. I am not sure if that is still the case. If you run into a problem, contact Atlas Travel in Dubrovnik. They will purchase your tickets for you. While in Dubrovnik you can pick them up at their office which is just outside the Pile Gate to the Old Town. I would have them purchase your bus tickets to Korcula also to be sure you get seats.

Bari is a scruffy little port town. I know, I used to live in Brindisi which is 90 kilometers south of there. You must be alert for pickpockets. You should research Bari well to find a place (not too close to the port or the train station) to spend time and get a meal.

Sounds like a great trip. I wish you the best.

I think you've probably planned your trip by now, but we're doing the exact same trip during the same time period for our ten year anniversary, and this is what we decided to do:

Fly into Dubrovnik for three nights. Ferry to Hvar for three nights. Ferry to Split for one night. Fly on EasyJet from Split to Naples (one hour direct flight). Ferry to Capri from Naples for two nights. Ferry from Capri to Positano for five nights (we'll do a day trip to Ravello) and fly home from Naples. 14 nights total and I'm hoping it isn't too hectic of a plan!

Congratulations and best wishes on your upcoming marriage. When in positano, do be sure to have make reservations for dinner at la tagliata. A bus will pick you up at your hotel to take you to this restaurant high up in the mountains with an incredible view and outstanding food. It is a set course menu with more courses than you can ever eat. Momma cooks whatever she decides to that day. Eating there was one of our most memorable experiences.
