I have been told on arrival into Dubrovnik
by ferry there are people meeting the boat
and offering accommodation
How does it work : Do they quote a price
and do you then negotiate

Yes. They will also be at bus stations, and you will see signs in the city and on the roads leading into it: sobe-zimmer-camera-rooms.
You may go to the apartment and examine it before making a final decision.
You may be at a disadvantage as a person traveling alone since many sobe are for couples or families and cost more than an individual might want to pay. You should also look into small hotels and hostels, especially for travel in July, August, and September.
Yes the lone travel at time a hinderance so I will take your advise & have small
hotels plus hostels as another option
Thanks for pointing that out as I appreciate any advise
