Croatia - Help With Itinerary, Please

We leave for our trip to Croatia in 5 days! We are still making last minute decisions and would appreciate any feedback from those of you who have been there. We are flying on a buddy pass so our flight arrangements are a bit odd but the only way possible due to full flights. We both love hanging out in nice squares and drinking a cold one while watching life pass by and we are avid hikers.

Here is our itinerary:

May 20th fly into Munich, train to Rosenheim to stay two days and one night with friends.

May 21st night train to Zabgreb. We will pick up a car here. Still trying to decide if we sould stay the day and night in Zagrab or head straight to Plitvice park for the day (2 1/2 hours by car?). Should we push on after a few hours in the park and head to Rovinj to overnight? The distance in miles from Zagreb to Rovinj is about 120 miles. I have read that the roads are not fantstic so we realize drive time will be longer than what it would take in the US. We don't want to stay in Plitvice because it doesn't seem to have an active night life. We are open to suggestions on other places to stay.

May 22 - Undecided
May 23rd - Undecided
May 24th - Undecided
May 25th - Undecided
May 26th - Split, Drop off car
May 27th Split
May 28th Hvar
May 29th Hvar
May 30th Dubrovnik
May 31 Dub.
June 1 Dub. - Day trip on Atlas to Montenegro
June 2 Dub.
June 3rd Night ferry to Ancona
June 4th - From ferry hop on train to Rome and spend our last three nights in Rome before we fly home to Portland, OR
June 2 Dub.

We are intrigued by the following places so let us know where you would spend time with the extra days:

Pula for the Colloseum
Opatija (is it too built up with modern resorts?)
Rab
Pag
Skradinski buk
Sibenik
Trogir

I have also heard there are some nice wineries but I can't find any info on it. Any ideas?

Eurotraveler, Since you have a car, I'd recommend spending some time on the Istrian Peninsula. Rovinj is a beautiful little town. Pula is definitely worth your time. There are lots of wineries on the Pelejesec (sp) Peninsula. It's about an hour north of Dubrovnik. It's worth a trip because it's not only beautiful (with some nice beaches and towns) but you can wine taste and buy incredibly inexpensive good wine.

5 days! Wahoooo! YOu will love it.

Grasshopper, did you spend any time in Zagreb? We have decided to spend our first day and night there after we arrive from Rosenhein via train. If you have been there I would love to hear about it. Thanks!

I didn't give Zagreb the time I'm sure it deserves. I flew from Dubrovnik to Zagreb at the end of my trip and it was over 100 degrees. After beautiful Dubrovnik, I wasn't up to a big grafitti covered city. So I caught a train to Lake Bled.

Check out Judi's trip report, "Ahhh, Croatia". She talks about the old town of Zagreb and it sounds pretty interesting (as long as it's not 100 degrees!)

Also, there are some good photos and tips about Zagreb on Virtual Tourist.

I recommend staying a day and night in Zagreb - walk in the neighborhood across from the cathedral, and take the funicular up to the historic Gradec neighborhood - lots to see there. I agree that you could should go on after visiting Plitvice. I haven't been to Rovinj so am not sure how long that would take. You could stop in Zadar if that's convenient. Enjoy! There are some good travel books on Crotia - hope you have them, like Lonely Planet and Rough Guide.

Rebecca, I booked at the Ilica. I read one negative post about it on this site but I have heard great things about it elsewhere so I will take my chances and give it a shot. I will post my opinion when I return.

Eurotravller, Please post your comments about Hotel Ilica when you return. We are booked there in October and wonder what it's like. Also interested in hearing about all your trip.

after reading so many good things about croatia, we have decided to go May 2005. We all have different ff programs so where to land is a problem. We would have about 2 1/2 weeks, and thought maybe we could fly from Venice to Dubrovnik on Europe by air, or another budget carrier. We would want to stay 5 nights or so in Dubrovnik, and a couple in Hvar. (How do you pronounce that word anyway??) We want to go to Plitvice park and maybe Rovinji or somewhere like that. Would we have enough time to drive clear back to venice to catch our flights home? I`m not sure how big Croatia really is. We don`t want to spend all our time driving. Thank you for any advise you can give us! Eurotraveller,we have printed your trip reports for future use.

Pat, I'm afraid EuropebyAir doesn't have flights between Venice and Dubrovnik. Suggest you repost your questions as a new thread so that people will look beyond what appears to be a post from 5/15 that needed to be answered by 5/20 to be useful. Hvar is pronounced Waar as far as I was able to hear it from local speakers. Good luck with your trip. Hvar and Dubrovnik are both wonderful.

Hvar is pronounced Hw-aar or Hoo-ar.
I believe there should be direct Zadar-Rab buses (Zadar - Karlobag - Jablanac ferry to Misnjak on Rab - Rab Town).
Jadrolinja (www.jadrolinija.hr) runs a Zadar-Rijeka ferry with stop-over in Rab.
